For many if not all of us ‘20-21 has been unprecedented in its impact.
Within that many of us have also been on a road to recovery from illness and or possibly beginning a new path.
There are many on here who have chosen to share their story and progress.
My story goes to 2018 when I was in intensive care with viral meningitis, overweight and having to be resuscitated twice.
The journey back has been a challenge and rewarding at the same time.
For the first time last night I carted around the northern edges of Rossendale.
By the standards of many on here it was not particularly epic by any means.
For me it was the first time not having that inner question and doubt “can I do this”
Well last night I didn’t have doubts, the climbs though still tough (for me) remained a challenge, but cleared for the first time with a smile on my face.
It’s always about getting out and having a go, small steps become long strides.
Happy Trails

magic !
Wow. Well done!
Thanks op, that's a great post to wake up to!
Totally get where you are coming from.
Have a fantastic '21 with any more adventures you have planned.👍
Brilliant, thanks for posting.
Brilliant. 👊
Great stuff OP! Was a great night to be out on the bike. Here’s to many more.
Good on you OP 🙌
Nice, OP. Very nice.
Brilliant. So pleased for you mate.
Cheers dude!
I'm in the middle of chemotherapy for bowel cancer and feeling pretty low to be honest. I did a 20km, flat Zwift ride on my turbo the other day and it honestly left me staggered, how much it took out of me. I'm always the first to joke and reassure everyone I'm fine, but the other day was a bit of a reality check that I'm actually really not that well.
I do know that there's light at the end of the tunnel, and I know I'm going to come out of this okay, but that wee post was a nice reminder.
Thanks mate
Craig xx
👍👍
Nice - congratulations on your recovery. I have had viral meningitis also - horrid isn't it?! Hope you have many more happy days and nights riding.
About 4 years ago I had lost weight and was riding quite often and getting fitter, the best I had felt since 88 when I got my first MTB.
I got a new bike and did a coast to coast ride, my ankles started hurting so I upped the saddle height a bit and that was a huge mistake. I had put it up too far but wearing flats meant I didn’t notice it.
I ended up damaging both of my Achilles and I just couldn’t recover from it. Although the damage wasn’t bad it just wouldn’t clear up. It was painful to walk, very difficult to ride and as a result I put 4 stone in weight on (I eat when I’m in pain and tired).
2019 I got back on my bike and did my back in as, and this is the advice from the physio, my core was like a toddlers. Another few months off and more weight gained.
So start of 2020 I was 17 stone (I’m only 5”7’). Lockdown has made me busy with work and stressed and annoyed and I didn’t take advantage of the nice weather last year.
Moved jobs - and failed a medical cos of weight. So work paid for slimming world and I’ve lost 2 stone so far. Bought a gravel bike and (despite me taking the mick out of them last year) has really made “just going out on the bike” enjoyable again as I can do a road ride and just pop down some bridleways when I want. I even enjoyed riding in the snow!
I know my issues aren’t like the OP, nowhere near as bad, but when you are stuck in a low position it’s good to hear these stories to help drag you out. Everyone has a trigger which will help them, mine was my work medical this time.
Good luck OP, and any others stuck in a crappy health situation.
Excellent. Currently a handful of rides into my return to bikes. Loving it, but it's a lot harder than it was in my early twenties when I was racing!
@beagleboy really sorry to read that. Beer with your name on if you're anywhere South Cheshire. (Post Covid of course!)
Beagleboy I wish you the very best in your journey, swinging the leg over the bar and turning the cranks once is where it starts. Take care mate.
b30tfw hats off for the weight loss, the best is still to come.
There are some incredibly talented and able riders on here who inspire, there is of course the sharp edged stuff which can be very funny indeed.
It’s a great community and I’m looking forward to hacking out around Ramsbottom with the collective when life returns to a measure of normal.
Have a great few days of expected dry weather, as ever Happy Trails.
Nice one Monty! Hope to see you around the valley one day.
Well done. Keep your spirits.
I was there 12 years ago - chemo, radiotherapy, surgery, chemo 2, at age 48.
There is light at the end of the tunnel. It is one of the best treatment success rates.
I went in fit, that helped me, and I have remained fit and not looked back.
pm me if you want to.
Great post OP!
Sorry to hear your plight, beagleboy - best wishes for a speedy recovery & b230ftw it sounds like you are heading in the right direction.
Thumbs Up all!!
Op, great post.
Great pictures too.
This brought a smile to my face and a nice warm feeling - and the sun is out and signs of spring are everywhere.
Nice one OP. All the best.
