Are there still trail closures and has the cafe reopened?
Cafe still closed, at least it was last week and I haven’t heard any different. You can use the Forest Holidays café at buzzard’s nest though.
I think there is still stuff closed / diverted on the black but I can’t give you any useful specifics. Access through what was the building site is all OK again.
As above, plus use the Rider's Retreat cafe for top scoff.
Also in their wisdom FLS Scotland have changed the annual car park pass. The £100, now excludes Glen Tress! To get a National car park pass it will now cost you £200! Mine certainly won’t be renewed!
About the car parking, yes, I noticed that. I usually get the Ae/Mabie/Dalbeattie pass for £45, but that has been discontinued, now its the complete Southern Scotland, without Glentress, for £55, or add on Glentress for £90 more. But, they have Ae on its own at £35 now, so I've gone for that as its where I go mostly. Seems a bit daft, as I’d have happily paid £50 for Ae/Mabie/Dalbeattie as before, but that option has gone, and £55 for places I've never been , and have little intention to go to, does not add any value to me.
Quick update - the café has reopened! The company that have taken over also run the cafe at Kirroughtree….and I like the pizzas they do there:)
They’d get a temporary menu on when I popped in, as they’d only reopened the day before. Some tea leaf had pinched all the pots and pans while it was shut, so they were having to sort that out. The new manager and chef sounded clued up and positive, so hoping it works out well.
Thanks - surely it will be better food than that served up by the last lot!
Quick update - the café has reopened!
Oh wow, that went from no hope to open in no time! I thought it was going to stay shut for the summer.
Still a fair amount of closures on the black, a mix of old storm damage and current forestry. Boundary is shut and officially diverts to the red (five year plan may be an option but equally may go into the forestry zone, don't know, the trailforks info for it is all wrong) . Mild Peril, Deliverance and Redemption are all shut for forestry work or access (broon troot I think has just been clearfelled) and Ewok Village should be open but it only accessible via the pushup at the end of it, not via the black.
So that's most of the good bits on the black tbh! I'd say just don't bother with it for now, if you want something more than the red go and explore the offpistes on the west, careless whisper etc, fantastic trails.
That really helpful, thanks all.
Driving to Dumfries & Galloway on Tuesday and then up to Isle of Skye and Raasay (via Laggan) on Thursday for 4 days and then back to D & G next Monday and up to Glentress for 4 days a week on Friday. Looks like rubbish weather but great riding
