A riding buddy & I are travelling up for some "all mountain" fun staying in Innerleithen July 22nd, 23rd, 24th. Does anyone suggest getting a guide for a day or so while we are up there. I have ridden Glentress before & loved the park, spooky wood etc and it all seemed fairly easy to follow and very well sorted and the climbs although big are still fine. Any recommendations would be welcome.

If you mean the trail centres, then no, you don't need a guide.

Cheers I guess we will be happy doing the trail centres if thats the "best" stuff around there. Last time I went (2-3yrs ago) I thought Glentress was great fun...hopefull Aye & Inners will be easy to find too.
I know that in some areas a guide really opens up the riding which may be hard to find...certainly my Portes du Soleil day with a guide was a highlight of my biking years!

Inners is plenty fun, esp. if you've not been before (only portaloos at the bottom though)

There's some great xc around there too; Househusband posted a good map of the fairly well-known gypsy glen route about 2/3's down this thread, along with some photos (couple of hours, great descent back into Peebles)

definately try the DH trails when you're up there, the push to the top is about 40min, signed and not too taxing, you can have fun on any bike, doesn't have to be a DH bike.

Or treat yourself to an uplift, they run saturday and sunday, google Uplift Scotland, good for your last day when you might be a bit knackered.

Was at Inners red XC course today and was glad of being there with a mate who knew it (Cheers Bruce), As Im quite a solitary biker I'd always been put of coming a cropper on my own. Innerleithen is brilliant and If you like GT you will love it. Just be careful of the bottom section at Caddon bank and give it a walk first or at least the first 100 yards , I bottled the big drop off and wish I'd done it now.
Drumlanrig also gets good reviews and may be worth a visit also.

Spend all 3 days in Glentress and ride inners a few times. Ae is a waste of travelling time IMO and the actual trail is a little boring until you hit the last 600m

Join the Tweed Love ride on the 24th July - it's free and E & T will guide you around some good local non trail centre stuff. It starts on Black GT, then cross country to Innerleithen town, across to Gypsy Glen then while in Peebles taking in Cademuir (sp ?) all good stuff and very scenic.

I would second the Don't Bother with Ae, I was decidedly underwhelmed by the XC route, but then I am rather spoilt with awesome stoked local trails. I think Ae XC was more set up for families, it all looked a bit rideable with a tag a long for me.

If you must go further afield again, second vote for Drumlanrig, if you like rooty twisty single-speedable type trails. Excellent flow if you are a good rider, crap if you are, well, crap.

So there's my biased judgement all out of my system for today.

Inners is fun so go check it out but also have a look around GT. There are alot of trails apart from the coloured routes, if you see some singletrack or lines heading off, follow them and see where they take you! Some sweet sections dropping of the fireroads and alot of downhill, chances are you'll end up back on a fireroad so using the official trail map you'll be able to see where you are so shouldnt have to worry about getting lost up there. The best rides ive had there have been when ive linked up bits of red, black, blue and alot of the natural trails to get as many of the best bits in one killer loop. Have fun.
