Message on FB just now 1.30pm

Please be aware the roads to the forest are icy and blocked by stuck cars .... With no ETA of a gritter

Please do not travel to the forest!

If you are waiting for somebody to come home be aware they are blocked in car park.

So people have been daft enough to try and get there in cars that are not set up for the snow

Drive to ride? Deserve what they get.... 😈

Actually, surrounded by stuck people in the pub opposite Didcot Parkway station listening to people wondering if they'll get home tonight. Bad enough to be stuck in a pub, stuck in a car at a forest carpark can be no fun at all. Best of luck getting home folks.

On other news my mate in Oslo said they're all watching the telly and laughing at he British in the "extreme" weather.

I know, it's cold, icy & snowy so I'll drive to the most remote trail centre I can, one that's in the middle of some exposed hills down some steep narrow roads...

What goes through people's minds? Even if you've got the best 4x4 in the world with winter tyres and chains, you can pretty much guarantee that some other idiot will have attempted to drive a RWD sports car down it and got stuck.

🙄

This is pretty much why on a snow day I leave for work before 6am to avoid other road users who will get stuck and block traffic. Not just RWD either, things like Minis with 21 inch alloys and low profile tyres taking a punt.

We do have a particular problem in our temperate UK climate though, stuff melts during the day and freezes overnight in a way you don't always get in colder (and often dryer) climates, which can make things tricky on the roads. That and the number of idiots.

Can we correct that please. Some idiot who can not drive will stop someone in a RWD sports car.

I see no problem if you're stuck st Gisburn. A good excuse to spend a couple more hours on the trails 😀
Helps if you took bike lights I guess...

Also helps if, when you get back to the car covered in snow & mud, you can actually get out of there to a place of warmth and hot showers! Being stuck in a car is one thing, being stuck when you're already cold, wet, tired, hungry and smelly could actually be life threatening.

I live a little in these circumstances and turn the car heaters on. 🙂

For the last month we've had Mrs Gti's Avon Ice Touring tyres on steel wheels for Ibiza or Polo on Ebay and on UKClimbing and this week I've walked around several car parks leaving notes on Ibiza and Polo windscreens and today we drove around some hilly and reasonably moneyed areas of Lancashire leaving notes on windscreens and through letterboxes of houses with Ibizas and Polos parked outside. Apart from one nibble on Ebay from someone who didn't bid, not one single person has shown any interest. I can only conclude that Ibiza and Polo drivers are idiots - apart from my wife of course.

The cafe was open, because they can't get home either

Huh ? This sounds completely deranged! Why so desperate to sell them? If someone left a note on my car saying ‘wanna buy some tyres’, actually contacting them to buy then would be the last thing I’d do.

The vast majority of people won’t be interested in purchasing a second pair of wheels for winter driving (no matter how sensible it actually might be). You know that right?

There is a severe lack of education in regards to winter tyres and how useful and safer they make your car in cold temperatures, not just for snowy conditions.

That car park can get cold in the winter, even without snow and ice.

The memory of peeling the socks off my frozen feet is enough of a deterrent for me from visiting when the temp is under 5deg.

I'd conclude that you're asking too much for them

I did a night ride there one winter night many years ago - it's the only time my CamelBak has ever frozen! Keeping moving just about kept us warm although we did stop on top of one hill, turn off our lights and just marvel at the stars. Incredibly clear but bloody hell it was cold!

We got to the pub afterwards, looked along the rows of handpumps and optics and all asked for hot chocolate!
