I'd be staggered if it's not rife within the peloton given how close they ride together for hours on end. If noone else gets it I'll be rethinking my reluctance to rock up at the weekly club run as id always thought pack rising was a very viable means of transmission. Hopefully im wrong.

Mitchelton-Scott withdraw entire team from the Giro after more positive COVID tests

https://www.greenedgecycling.com/news/mitchelton-scott-withdraws-from-giro-d-italia

Big call, but the right one. Makes me wonder how many other teams have been affected, and what might happen at the Vuelta?

Some news after rest day test day:

https://twitter.com/TourDeJose/status/1315922239712354305?s=20

Not surprised Mitchelton are out - it would have been a bit of a puzzle if Yates was the only one in that team who got infected.

Shame to see Kruijswijk out as he was in a position to have a real impact on the race.

Hope everyone infected recovers well.

interestng to read that UCI testing showed only Kruijswijk and the sunweb guy were the only RIDERS to test positive- all others were team staff including whole Mitchelton Scott contingent, but also including one each from INEOS and AG2R La Mondiale

Will be interesting to see what happens with Sunweb. They pulled Tiesj Benoot after he'd been in contact with Jan Bakelants on a TV show and Bakelants went on to test positive. The extension of that logic is that if they have one positive rider then the whole team should go home.

I wonder if it was transmitted through the peloton, or whether each team have contracted it via different routes.

Have heard (via twitter) that the hotels used by teams were also open to the general public, so another possible infection route there

Listened to the Cycling Podcast, the team manager of Jumbo-Visma has been very critical of the Giro organisers, he said that there 4-5 teams, the police moto riders, Shimano neutral service and members of the public all staying in the same hotel on the very first night and all eating from the same buffet.

We have had unsigned metal bollards, helicopter pilots showing off to mates and blowing over barriers and the usual terrible organisation.

It needs the UCI to step in and have a go at RCS as the Giro, as much as i love it, needs to improve.

Puts it into stark contrast with TdF where no positive tests in peloton at all, every rider in separate room and one team to a hotel.

Jumbo have released a statement about their withdrawal:

https://www.teamjumbovisma.com/article/news/team-jumbo-visma-withdraws-from-giro-ditalia-after-positive-covid-test/

This, from DS Addy Engels:

“We have taken our responsibility after Steven’s contamination. We’ve all been very close to him. Regarding the situation at the team of Mitchelton-Scott, where multiple staff members got infected after one rider had contracted the virus, we think this is the most responsible decision. We’ve made this decision together with the riders, staff and the team’s management. It’s a big thing to withdraw from a race and especially in a race like the Giro d’Italia. But we’ve also taken this decision in the interest of the race. This is the safest decision we can make. Not only for our team, but also for other teams.”

Seems like the right thing to do, and I suspect that Sunweb might follow suit.

By all accounts the Tour was far more stringent about keeping the race isolated from the public where possible. Coupled with the rising infection rates across Italy it's not looking great for the race to continue.

I'd agree, bin it off, allow the riders and teams some time to recover and then hopefully run the Vuelta as normal.

It's fascinating how different the protocols and management have been between the Tour and the Giro - one might think given the success of the TdF, the UCI would mandate the same protocols to ensure no screw-ups.

But then even on the Tour it looked like it was more luck that there were no team dropouts than anything - on some of the climbs riders were basically within touching distance of fans, some/ many without masks.

Engels from Jumbo-Visma now reporting that at the hotel on the second night in Sicily, there were 5 teams in the hotel, along with a wedding, and they wonder why COVID has spread through peloton, shocking organisation.

Loved that finish, especially the time he took to get his sunnies on despite the conditions, and the sort of 'regal' wave he gave as he came in, not sure if it was a 'yeah, where are you now?' to the doubters or more of a 'applause, please' to the crowd or something in between.

I'd found myself a bit down on Sagan recently, wasn't sure if it was because he seemed/looked to be giving up on stages and sprints quite quickly if they weren't going his way, or perhaps because of the altercation with WvA, not sure. Nice to see him back though.

It was a good ride from Sagan and a well-measured effort in the break when he got dropped. He was smart about the way he weaned the number in the break down to just Ben Swift before leaving him with 12km to go. He did a very good job to hold off the chasers when they were at 25s but I think the weather played into his hands.

I get excited when he wins, it's been a long time with many 2nd & 3rds.

Love the guy and what he has done to put some panache back into the sport.

Gaviria out with a positive Coronavirus test. Given he tested positive back in march (was it at Dubai?) he's one of the unlucky few to catch two different strains (there have been at least four reported cases), or there are two of him, or one was a false positive - maybe a sneaky way to get out of a week of bloody hard climbing?

I've ridden this climb. One of my favourites, considerably quieter than Stelvio.

Amazing ride from Tao, he could conceivably make it into Pink today. Kelderman seems to have recovered his game a bit though, it did look like he was properly gone at one point.

Shame Tao didn't get the stage win although after sitting on the front for the previous 25km, it was fairly inevitable that he'd get jumped on the line.

Tao has been winning bike races since he was a Youth rider, he's a phenomenal talent. Great to see him coming through here, nice that Ineos recalibrated pretty quickly after G's early crash.

The drugs reference just isn't necessary unless of course you have info to the contrary that you're passing to the UCI?

That was one of the most exciting and enjoyable stages I've seen all race season.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall in the Sunweb dining room tonight.

Dennis was phenomenal.

Watching the riders trying to get into their jackets in that wind was quite stressful. Equally tricky was myself trying to make curtains in my workroom while watching the race on a small screen.
