Tom Dumoulin on the break today. Lots of ways to interpret this but I just love seeing a GT winner squeezing what they can out of a race once they’re out of GC

Early days but RedAjax - Tove W, is doing well in the STW velogames league, 97th position out of 18268. Good rider choice.

Yesterday was a goodun and today looks another. Hoping for some MvdP action but if Cort pulled something out the bag for my dream team I'd be happy.

Rapid start to today's stage.
Even Sean Kelly is managing to sound excited!

. Still lots of people close on GC, and reassuring to see that Guillame Martin has lost some time that he’ll get back in a breakaway.

Just quoting myself from 6 days ago because I like to congratulate myself for pointing out the obvious

Thomas de Gendt is winning the de Gendt classification. :o)
Was thrilling to watch Thomas win the stage, really well deserved.
Also hats off to Wout Poels who was on top form today, even after being in quite a bit of yesterday's breakaway, solo.

I've two riders(Buchman and Almeida) in that small group but I'm not hopeful they'll hold on.

Excellent race today, great to see all the gc guys slugging it out.

Need to find out what happened to Natnael Tesfazion, that looked like it could have been nasty

After a superb days racing, a landmark win and great displays of sportsmanship, I didn't expect this as a headline.

Anyone else get big Esteban Chaves vibes from Biniam Girmay?

Really hope he can keep racing for a whole heap of reasons.

I’d be looking to read the risk assessment for the podium ceremony if I was the organiser!

In F1, they hand the driver an already-opened bottle precisely to avoid these sorts of incidents.
I can see some hastily rearranged protocols from now on - MVDP had a similar incident only a couple of days ago, the cork hit him in the arm.

Personally, I think the whole thing is kind of anachronistic, wasteful and messy. I wonder how much of the annual production of champagne is actually drunk and how much just gets sprayed pointlessly around a stage?

No, MVDP got one on the forehead, it was someone else (demarre?) who got it in the arm

are the bottles being pre-shaken this year "to give a better spray" or something? I don't know why cyclists (who legendarily have weak arms) are being given HUGE botles of fizz after 200kn and a sprint finish anyway....

I can see the new "Oakley podium safety goggles" being popular with the hipsters next year...

Real shame though, some first grand tour for him, stage win against MVDP and 5 top 5 finishes so far in the race, he has really brought something to the race and shame to see him go.

Poor Girmay. There needs to be some training in the future for the younger, newby stage winner, on how to avoid this kind of incident.

I was doing quite well with him in my Velogames team, will miss him a lot.
Maybe he'll have a place in Le Tour.

This is a cracking stage, it's had it all!
Final 8km, gonna be close if the lone leader gets it or it comes down to a sprint finish...

My sprinters appear to be a pair of duds. I don't even like Cavendish but added him as he has a habit of confounding me. Typically he's at it again. I don't think there is much more available for the rest of the giro either, I wonder if they will chuck it.

Shame about Girmay, was shaping up to be a great bit of racing with him and MvdP. Hopefully this releases Taaramae a bit and he can chase a stage or two.

They're dropping like flies! Bardet abandons, apparently due to stomach problems. Such a shame, he's been on really good form recently

Edit - Confirmed by his team now. sounds like he's really quite poorly.

That's Bardet and GRMaye I've lost now. Lopez is apparenty riding but hasn;t scored a single point for me yet, he's been invisible so far. Saving himself for stage wins next week?

Was a bit shocked at Bardet abandoning. What a shame, he has been in really good shape and this Giro looked promising as 'his race' for once.

Here's hoping he too can be seen in Le Tour, back to rude health.

Bardet abandons

A great shame that, I shall have to shout for the philosopher.

Lopez is apparenty riding but hasn;t scored a single point for me yet

Which Lopez? Surely Juan Pedro has scored points?

Christ that climb looks steep. I think one of the camera bikes has just burnt his clutch out or something, stalled solid on the climb.

at one point, Cav was in the breakaway

CAV. in the BREAK.

Madness

he's drifted back now, but the break is a strong one, it's likely to be a win from the breakaway

Well done Hugh for smacking that idiot fan. Hugh had been shouting at the fan without any response.
It's hard enough trying to climb up something that steep, without a pedestrian, running alongside, blocking and filming the race.

tweet didn't load,

Carapaz, Hindley and Landa did their best or at least top 3 best climbing performances of their career, pushing huge watts 6.20 w/kg for 36 minutes on Santa Cristina after they had done 14.63 kj/kg/h (mega fatigue) for 5 hours and 20 minutes before the climb.

nibali would have won that if his bars were not 6 miles wide #danbigham

the gc race is kinda like 3 super domestiques duking it out, none of them quite have the knock out blow to floor the others. and Richie Porte is out the back with 100km to go.
