anyone used these ? how do they compare to say - my PDW full metal fenders ?

Wifes bluemels are dead again - and thats after a few on the hoof repairs, itd be nice to replace with something thats reliably repairable if broken......

looking at these - the sks edge which look pretty horrible for a classic tourer style bike (genisis tour de fer) another set of PDWs but those got spendy .... mines were damaged stock from charlie for about half the current rrp or the velo orange hammered ones

Edge are the cheapest at 49 quid - the giles berthoud are 54 and the velo orange are 65 - but arguably in black look the best.

Any other options ive missed ?

Have a look at the Kinesis alu ones? https://road.cc/content/review/258025-kinesis-fend-mudguards

See them around from £45 up to £55 online

Don’t know what you lot are doing to mudguards, I have a 1980s Dawes Audax tourer here with original lightweight SKS chromoplastic guards still fitted. Not a split or chip in them! 😎

I had a pair on my Pompino for awhile, wrecked one and replaced with SKS plastic ones.

They look really nice, but are heavy and expensive, haven't seen the PDW ones. Bit overkill for a Pompino...

Had them for years, and they're no heavier than SKS. A massive PITA to fit, but once done they don't need touching again.

I've got those Kinesis ones.

Back is great front one not so much, it would benefit greatly from two stays instead of one.

I wish Radial would do their ALU guards again, they were excellent.

That's the thing when bikes sit in the shed, they're everlasting... 😜

I really like the Portland Design Works eeermmm 'fenders', mudguards <sigh> bloody Yanks... I'm just too mean to buy them. Plastic mudguards are a bit of a consumable on my bikes. If you travel enough and ride enough, they all seem to get battered and/or broken eventually.

See I was of same opinion but blumels/chromoplastics used to be a yearly or 2 yearly consumable on our bikes .

Since I went pdw I never looked back .....even survived airplane travel and riding across Canada.

Hence I'm looking to buy a nice robust set for the wife's bike too.

Saw the kinesis but discounted due to that single stay. I can hear the rattle from here....that's the other great thing about pdws. Silence.

I've just fitted a set stainless mudguards to my old Dawes Windrush 'gravel' bike.

It's brought back all the memories of the frustrations of metal mudguards. I thought I had it sorted - made little rubber gaskets for all the contact points, made sure everything was tight, and it passed the pick the bike up and drop it from 6" test with no rattles.

But on the road and especially on a rough track it sometimes sounds like a bean can with a couple of ball bearings in it.

I suspect the rear brake bridge area because the mudguard has a sliding bracket to allow for different shapes of bike. I'll eventually drill and rivet it and hopefully that will be a fix.

But they look 'right' and fit nicely. 🙂
