Bought giant propel di2 last November and only used it 3 times this year . Went out on it last night and the rear gear hanger snapped on me sending it into the rear wheel and damaging the carbon frame . Am I covered under warranty and how are giant in this situation
User error I’m afraid .. Clearly the hanger was bent if bike fell over/stored with other bikes etc.
Hangers are designed to snap before something else does. Whats the actual damage?
Wrote rear mach off, damaged carbon frame, and buckled the wheel . Always kept away from other bikes in lockup and I've only done 80 miles on it . Surely that's covered under a warranty
Is it a replaceable mech hanger on those? Even if it's integral to the frame, it's going to be hard to prove the hanger failing wasn't as a result of something caught in the rear mech or a twisted chain.
By all means ask, but expect to be told no. Perhaps ask for an assisted purchase as a good will gesture rather than asking for warranty.
Or start a new thread asking about who people recommend for carbon repair.
Take it up with the shop where you bought the bike.
ive found Giant warranty to be extremely good and it's one of the reasons I stick with them.
(example, I found a crack in an old, unused 26" Trance frame. They don't make them any more, it got replaced with an equivalent model complete bike (£3k+) free of charge. Although I suspect a lot of legwork was done by the guys in my LBS)
got to take it back to pedal on tomorrow to be assessed. But just by looking at it you can tell it's not been used much it's as new to look at
damaged carbon frame, and buckled the wheel .
If it's just a spoke tension and a scratch or 2 in the frame then maybe expect a wheel true and an explanation as to why hangers snap.
Was the mech moving freely when you took it out? Was the chain stiff? A bike that has had a couple of rides over 6 months could have a rusty link or anything.
In my experience, pedal on are good guys.
Note. They were my chosen local bike shop even though they were 25 miles away.
Who makes the decision the shop or giant
Cards on the table - I work in the Giant store in Sheffield....

The hanger didn't just snap on it's own. The mech hit the spokes FIRST, and that's what snapped the hanger.
There's only three things that cause mechs to go into back wheels
1) Foreign object (e.g. a stick) through the wheel
2) Poor adjustment
3) Bent hanger or mech
1 is obvious, 2 is rare as the chain usually (not always) falls down behind the sprockets first giving you a warning. 3 is by faaaaaaar the most common. I must straighten 2 hangers a week on average, people don't even know they've done it usually.

Questions I'd ask - Has it been back for it's first free service? Where is it stored? Has it been in a car or on a rack? Were the gears performing flawlessly prior to the incident? Would you know if they weren't anyway? Have you fiddled with it? Has your mate fiddled with it? Do you know what you're doing if either of you did?
The chances are it's not warranty in the slightest. But if you're nice and polite you might get a good result off Giant, they'll warranty nearly anything IME. But don't cop a strop if you don't.
No the mach didn't go into the wheel until the hanger snapped and swung it into the wheel with the loose chain

Err, so you were riding along staring at your rear mech between your legs? How else would you know this?
Hangers DO NOT just snap of their own accord. There's always a root cause, the broken hanger is just the outcome.
So the mech adjustment was way out between your last ride and this one?

Not very often anyway.
Cervelo ones used to. But even they would last more than 80 miles (not much more though!)
As above - most likely bent hanger.
Shop might replace it at a discount/FOC as goodwill if you moan enough (I used to have to do so).
Also they DON'T beeak for no reason.
The best advice you could take notice of:

4) defective rear mech - I know of a few Zee that failed and trashed wheels.
It’s most likely going to be down to user error or wear and tear I’m afraid. You can go in and be really nice about it and hope someone will take pity on you, but don’t count on it being under warranty.
^^^ What he says, just hope they're feeling charitable....
I would lay money on the chances that a sniper took a pot shot at you... missed and hit the rear mech. The bullet sent the dead straight mech into the spokes, and giant now owe you a new house.

That's the one 👍
Cust:"why do they put a bendy hanger on it if it's going to bend?"
Me:"they are designed to do that so it saves your frame"
Cust:"i didn't bend it"
Me:"look (shows customer alignment tool) it's out of alignment"
Cust:"have you got a stiffer one you can fit so it doesn't happen again"
Me:"you've not grasped the idea behind this have you?"
happens at least once a week
