Hi all. I have picked up a Trance from 2011 for my 10 year old.

https://www.mbr.co.uk/reviews/26-full-suspension-bikes/tested-giant-trance-x4-1295

Great bike, really pleased. Anyhow I want to convert it to 1x9 with a wide range cassette.

Ideally I would like to use a pair of 170mm XTR cranks that I have, instead of the Shimano M542 175mm heavy things that a currently on it. The existing pedals are also stuck in the M542s but that should be fixable

Issue is,  the BB is pressfit. As I understand it frames are not boost, rather the chainsets are and you achieve correct chainline with spacers and so on. I don't think chainline for 1x9 will be a problem, but the axle is too wide and requires spacers of some sort.

Is this possible? How? I am used to putting spacers between the BB shell and the frame with a threaded BB...

Thanks in advance

'Boost' covers Frames, Hubs and (potentially) Cranks but lots of people have managed to make non-boost Cranks work with boost frame/hubs.

At a guess though the 2011 frame you've got won't be boost, from the images I've pulled up for it on google I'd guess its QR (135mm), so if your XTR cranks are normal HT2 types you either need the correct PF BB (is it a shimano PF BB already in there)? or some adaptors to convert to BSA.

But Boost shouldn't really come into the discussion on a bike from 2011...

Here you go: A useful little bit from OneUp

The table at the end might be handy if you know what crank/frame spacing you have, obviously you don't have to use OneUp parts and they tend to assume people are on 10 or 11 speed.

you probably want something like a ~48mm chainline, it's also worth noting 10 and 11 speed chains will work with 9 speed and tend to mesh better with N/W rings (IME/IMO)...

Are you missing the various preload contraptions from the xtr cranks?

Pretty confident in saying all ht2 cranksets have the same axle spacing once correctly assembled and the shimano pf bottom bracket you have should fit them all perfectly well. It's not got much of anything to do with boost or not.
Even if the spider etc is offset the axle length is the same...

Xtr cranks however are not in most cases as straight forward as "two" pieces.

Stuck a hope bearing in there, fits perfect!

Is that on top of the normal bearing?
In either case that's definitely not right!

What model is the crank set?

I bought a non-boost NX groupset and matching BB from Wiggle for not much and fitted it to my Mk1 Cotic Soul.

It's great. I have nothing more to add.
