I've been offered a silly-cheap deal on a TCR Advanced. Only problem is they don't have an XL, which I think would be my preferred size. Having said that, at a gangly 187cm tall, Giant's sizing chart puts me on the L frame (which has 53cm seat tube and 58cm top tube).

Any real-world experience? I'm relatively inexperienced with road bike sizing and I gather Giant geometries are far from typical.

Test rides would obviously be the way to go but I don't think that's going to be feasible, hence asking on here. Thanks.

At 187 you don't want an XL

I'm 188 with a 34inch inside leg and could ride an m/l comfortable( which I used to for a tcr advance when I used to race) as it let the front end be niceand low or a large- as I've just done with my propel to have a nice stack height without 2 million spacers.

My old large ocr dimensions matched that of the large propel after I'd morphed it with a 130 stem anyway

With giant ignore seattube height as compact frames the top tube and reach is what matters

Sit on some.

I agree with Trail Rat. I’m 180 and desperately tried to fit on an M/L as they had the model I wanted on sale. Test rode both an M and M/L and the M/L was a bit too big. I’d try one for size, but suspect XL will be too big.

That's very helpful and exactly what I wanted to hear! Thanks!

Whereas I'm 179cm and I ride a M/L with 120mm stem. I've got short legs and a long torso though. I could ride a medium pretty easily, but I find this M/L giant fits better than the 54cm cervelo I had before, and is lower at the front than the 56cm tarmac.

I’m 6”2 with a 32 inside leg and my M/L TCR was a perfect fit for me.

5 ft 10 here, short legs - I tried M and M/L - the M fits me perfectly (though bought a Medium Defy in the end !)

Giants sizing charts are comprehensive and fairly accurate.

Ianpv is at the bottom of ml or top of m

I'm at top of ml and bottom of l.

And it's personal preferance beyond that

XL is not recommended until 193cm.

If you are on the boundary, size down and add a longer stem as needed. I'm 179 and ride a M with 115 mm stem. I could just stretch to a M/L but it would be too large. Longer torsos might want a longer top tube, which raises the bars slightly. You aren't an XL. You are more likely to be a M/L or possibly a L. My nephew is your height and I put him on a M/L with slighly longer stem.

Handling is better with a longer stem and shorter top tube, all else being equal. You may need to add (gasp) an extra spacer. The Propel has the same geometry but longer head tube.

That's odd considering a M defy is much shorter with a much longer headtube than a M TCR.
I'm cramped AF and sat upright on my shorter mate's M defy

Wheras at 5'11" (33" inside leg) my fairly slammed M TCR fits perfectly.

^^^ on the Giant Defy size chart I am right in the middle of the Medium, and had a bike fit to check it. As others have said, the sizing charts seem pretty spot on.

I ride Medium Defy, TCR and Propels. I need a longer stem on the Defy to make up for the shorter top tube and slightly slacket head angle. Headtube on the Defy is about the same as the Propel.

the bike fit on the medium Defy did put me onto a 110mm stem instead of the standard 100mm

180cm on a m/l TCR here. I bloody love it! 100mm stem is spot on for me. I rode a rental bike in Majorca for a week then came back and bought one haha. A recomended test ride process.

Not everyone's as electric as you on a bike. Some like a more upright position for various reasons.

Yeah. fair enough.

bikefits are like haircuts.
Not everyone can do their own themselves and not many professionals will get what you want 100% spot on but you can usually sort it out properly over time after you've left 😉

a good analogy - was a while back when I had the initial fit and have tweaked position on subsequent bikes along same lines. Am also rather balding... 🙂

All sounds advice here. From a serial Giant rider I'm 185cm and always ride a m/l on the road or CX
