Anybody ride a FS Giant in 16(s) or 18(m)?
Just wondering how they measure up to other brands?
I currently ride two 16 inch HTs by Ragley and On-One which are great for dicking about on but a little cramped for all day comfort.
The two best sized bikes I've had in the past were both 17 inch (Kona and Saracen) and I once had an 18 inch Trek that was too big really.
Ideally I could do with Giant's 16 being on the large size or the 18 being on the compact size!
I'm buying online so don't really want to take the p#@s by going into a shop to try for size and then walking away.
I would say that the M giant I have is on a par with a previous 17" Kona, so I would say if a M giant is classed as an 18 it's a small 18.
I would say though that it would depend on the bike in question.
I've just been through this with an Anthem 29er.
Going by ST (20") its too big for my 5'11 and 3/4 but according to giant size charts I'm at the bottom of the Large sizing. However for me the 615 TT with 100mm Stem has resulting in a perfect fit.
Look at the last (muddy) pic in this thread of the bike I posted yesterday. I could do with the seat up another 1/2 inch (33.5 inside leg).
Have struggled with Giant's sizing in the past.
Tried a (26") Anthem in both Med and Small - one felt like a gate, the other just seemed too small. Something in-between would have been spot on.
For comparison a Spesh in 17" or turner in medium is spot on for me.
(average 5'8")
I'm practically 6ft (182cm) and have ridden a Giant Trance in Large with 70mm stem and it was one of the best fitting bikes I've ever sat on.
Also tried my mate's medium Anthem 26er with 110mm stem and it felt too cramped / front heavy.
I had the same dilemma when I bought my Trance (26"). The sizing does seem awry, but basically go with what the charts recommend. Nothing beats giving one a go though. Whereabouts are you? I'm sure someone local would let you ride theirs up and down the street (that's how I came to a conclusion).
Also worth finding out where your local Giant store is. They'll let you out on a longer ride with a demo bike. I very nearly bought an ex-demo Anthem from them before deciding to go for the Trance, which I then bought online. Taking the mick? Not really, given they're a manufacturer outlet and it was an honest test.
Bear in mind that the stems on Giants tend to be long but are easily changed.
