A friend's Giant Contact Switch SL seatpost is 'unlocked' i.e. it's fully extended. You can smoothly and easily push it down but it just pops up - this is without the cable attached.

Have dismantled it and nothing looks too bad. But 2 qns:

1) How does the lever trigger the hydraulic to unlock? Is this pin (Allen key pointing at it) which slots into the cable attachment piece, meant to move in and out? It's firmly rigid/stuck and when inserted into the cable assembly, it only just protrudes thru. Hope that makes sense!

dropoer

2) How do hydraulic struts work to lock and unlock?

Thanks

I've not seen the more recent version but that's exactly how the first generation version worked. My original one went in the bin as replacement parts weren't available but Giant list some replacement cartridges on their website https://www.giant-bicycles.com/gb/contact---contact-s-switch-dropper-seatpost-replacement-cartridge

Our contact seatpost packed in. Turns out giant don't sell the cartridges any more and I had to bin it.

Presuming it’s like Brand-X which I’m sure it is, that pin should come out completely.

Essentially all that happens is the actuator on the bottom of the post pushes on that pin when you push the lever and the pin pushes on something inside the cartridge to allow the post to go up / down.

If the pin is stuck, it’s holding the cartridge permanently open or closed.

Yup that pin needs to move, grab it with some molgrips and pull it out, it might be bent and is catching on the sides
