You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi - new to forum, and relatively new to MTB. I've currently got an entry-level bike (GT Aggressor XC3), and want to upgrade to a full-sus. Having spent some time researching, I've narrowed it down to the 2 above.
As the Trek retails for £6-700 more than the Giant, I'm assuming it's the better bike (particularly on the rear sus & brakes), however my question is - will I get £700 extra out of it, given my level of ability?
As a guide, my most regular trail is the red at Llandegla + the odd duathlon - I'm not technically up to black standard (yet!), and want a bike that's going to smooth out the worst of the rocky stuff & give me the confidence to increase speed.
Thanks
I have to ask.. why are you comparing two bikes that are £700 apart? Both have equivalent higher (the Anthem) and lower (the Trek) spec bikes in the range which are the same frame but with different kit.. so you should be able to compare versions that are more closely priced.
Comparing the Trek Ex and Anthem at comparable price levels (i.e. not £700 apart) then the Giants probably get marginally better spec at any price point and will also suit duathlons and Llandegla better due to the shorter travel.
Both will increase your speed on rocky terrain, the Trek probably slightly more so due to the 20mm extra travel, but the Anthem will be a bit lighter.
Might not have been clear in the post - it's more about whether a relative newbie, riding mid-range trails, will get the value out of shelling out for the more expensive components - rather than a direct comparison of the bikes.
If I had to have one bike ever it would probably be a fuel. They're really really good and much more capable in the rough stuff than the giant.
I would go for a specialized camber, the best one i could afford.
I've had 3no. Fuel Ex's now and absolutely love them. Only a one bike man and it copes with everthing I throw at it.
Only thing is each time I've ended up upgrading the wheels and brakes they standardly come with.
Why don't you look at last years models for better price saving.
For instance:

This place is local-ish to me and always good on price - they don't do treks though.
Will potentially get more bike for your buck.
Happy hunting.
