Slightly stoopid thread title, apologies.

Looking to get back into doing some longer rides again and wondering if an Anthem 29 would cope with proper rocky trails and be fun or whether it is more focussed on swoopy singletrack, fire roads and well packed singletrack.

My old bike is a Mojo Special Brew, but it's completely knackered.  It was great for up and along, but not that great downhill.

I've got a Spec Enduro, which is great on the downs and short ups, but don't really fancy doing long distances on it.  On the other hand there's no point in slogging the Anthem up the Dodds ridge on Helvelyn if it's not going to enjoy going down Dollywaggon the other side.

Would like to do do Skiddaw - Helvelyn - High Street, Perhaps some silly Marin/Penmachno/CYB enchainement.  Coast to Coast etc.

My son's got an Anthem 6fiddy, and that seems excellent for proper mtb, but from what I can see the 29er is much more race focussed.  I don't want to race, just go for long rides.  Is that a good plan?

100mm is ok for the marin, id prefer 120mm for cyb and penmachno. How about a spark 29 with the 120 travel?

I have a 100mm giant anthem, quick bike, quicker than my whyte 129, but I prefer the whyte at cyb.

Did a week in Verbier on one this summer (mostly the rockier natural trails rather than jumpy bike park) . The 90mm back end worked amazingly well (good linkage design meant you could still pedal with it quite soft / not bothering with lockout). 100mm Fox fork was disappointing - couldn't get an air pressure that suited my 62kg (might be a volume spacer that I need to get rid of, but Fox's spring rate graph suggests it won't make much difference).

Will shortly be swapping it for my hardtail's 120-130mm X Fusion Trace - suspect that will transform it into a very capable rocky xc bike.

Thanks both. Good info.  Dyls, in respect of this point:

but I prefer the whyte at cyb.

Would that still be the case if you were planning to do 3 or 4 routes at CYB in a day?

Genuine question.

I think I’d still go for the whyte at cyb, especially the black routes. To confuse things though, I’m around 8 ish minutes quicker around the marin on the giant than I am on the whyte. The anthem is a 27.5, not the 29er your looking at.

I live locally and its always whyte at cyb and penmachno, anthem or hardtail at marin.
