Love tubeless, but yesterday was the first time I tried with electrical tape and an old valve, normally I use the 'proper' kit.
Anyhow , this was a disaster. Kore Sl Rim, wired HR2 DH casing. Wrapped one wrap of electrical tape cut to width so it wasn't coming up the side of the rim walls, , cut an x for the valve and put that in, again so no rubber went near the rim walls. I put the tyre on, put in some stans , soapy water around the rim and tyre bead and tried to pump it up with a floor pump. No joy.
So , went with a co2 cannister , which got the tyre to seat . Didn't hear a crack so topped it up to around 50psi with a floor pump. sealant was oozing out through the walls but all good , swished it around and left it outside in the garden on its side for a while.
Good job I did. BANG big noise and the tyre was off the rim , sealant everywhere . The neighbour came out to ask if everything was ok 🙂
So basically I thought ok I've probably damaged the tyre... Turns out the rim was buckled too...!
I have straightened the rim. Should I try again? What did I do wrong? Should I just stick with a tube?
Ta!
Wired non tubeless tire slack on rim (as evidenced by fact needed to use CO2) so blew off. Nothing to do with the ghetto attempt. Shouldve taken tire off and made up the slack as soon as you realised it wasn't sealing, typically with non-tubeless tyres I find you need to use the split tube method to ensure the bead is tight against the rim bed or it just burps all the time.
I think putting 50psi into the tyre was the problem - IME 20psi is enough to seat a tyre if its gonna work. The high pressure and the lubricated bead did the rest..
Ghetto tubeless beef
most people stick to tyres.
As above, I'd build up the rim bed with a bit more tape and stay safe with no more than 30psi in no tubeless rims.
That said, I had no joy with ghetto tubeless without the split tube method, but I'm not a fan of that because its a faff when it goes wrong on the trail.
Ok , Can't be bothered with the sit tube method . I'll try with say two wraps of tape this time and lower pressure. Still go with soapy water?
Couple wraps of Gorilla tape. They sell it at DIY stores now. Leccy tape is poo.
Sorry I meant gorilla tape . Should it just be in the rim bed or slightly up the side of the rim wall too?
Gorilla tape should cover the full width of the rim, but at no point climb the side of the rim, its too thick and may stop the tyre 'hooking' onto the bead hook (if it has one) or just cause general uneven-ness on the seal. You might need more than 2 wraps if its a loose tyre at the bead. Note also, with gorilla tape the tyre probably wont 'pop' onto the bead seat as you've built a smooth ramp to it, but you know this already now 😉
I've never paid that much mind to be honest, just whack some on and ghetto inflator it up. Stans in afterwards.
50psi is too much, no wonder it went pop.
Gorilla Clear Repair Tape is better - it doesn't have a cloth backing that's heavier and absorbs sealant / comes unstuck
Ok , two wraps of gorilla tape on now. Just put a tube in and new tyre , will leave it overnight and try again tomorrow . It's ok with co2 cannister to seat it right?
i find co2 bolloxes the sealent up. Ghetto 9p inflator (search on here)
Went up great this morning with a normal track pump . Two wraps of tape and valve core out, didn't even need soapy water. Rad!
