[Closed] ghetto SS... will I die..?

I've been umming and aahing about converting my only mtb to singlespeed since moving to an area where the conditions seem likely to destroy components at a much quicker rate than I'm used to or can afford to sustain..

Last night the decision was effectively taken out of my hands when my rear mech got clouted by a rock, leaving the bottom jockey wheel unable to turn.. ( I didn't even notice this until I was cleaning the bike, due to all the sticky, sandy clag that had enveloped my entire drive train)

Not presently being in a very bouyant situation cashflow-wise, I'm wondering about a bit of a short term ghetto solution for the moment..

I have a chain tensioner and singlespeed cog and spacers, but was just gonna use the chainring and chain from the present 2x9 set up.. will it be able to withstand the rigours of the new manly SSer's thighs that I'm sure to instantly develop..?
Will there be any issues with the chain skipping/jumping/getting caught in my flowing SSer's beard..?

Will I die from testosterone poisoning..?

Any experiences..?

Bog-standard 8 speed chains work fine for SS. I'm not sure what the difference is with 9 speed ones other than they are narrower....

I've got an old 32t ss ring you can have for nowt if you want it?
That combined with what you have should be more than up to the job.

Edit.
You'll have to either file your chainring bolts down or use some washers as spacers to get the ring to fit.

Set it up and see. 9speed chains are a touch narrower and if its stretched it may not sit well on the I assume new sprocket. If thats the case a cheap and cheery 8speed chain and possibly budget steel (?) chainring might be a worthy investment.

thanks SSS.. very kind, I've sent you an email.. 😀

garage dweller - I think I'm going to set it up and try it this arvo.. the sprocket has done a fair few miles on the pub bike in the past, so I'm hoping it will marry the chain successfully..
I just needed the gentle persuasion of a bit of STW peer pressure..

After the discussion I had last night, unfortunately there will be no new parts finding their way onto the bike in the next few weeks unless I really want to experience Mrs Yunki passing my still attached testicles through a very fine sieve..

Probably not, but you will become very angry and convinced that you are amazingly, unbelievably awesome.

So you've got all the components yeah?? What can go rong??
Have you worked out a ratio for yourself yet?
Give us the teeth/wheel sizes and well, we' ll do that for you if you need it.
I have a 32 chainring on a 104bcd you can have. It's in good condition.

Chains are £4 in Asda if you're worried about the strength of a 9 spd. They last for years.

I know you said no bike related purchases and cash was tight, and it's true you could file down your existing chainring bolts but if you can slip these in under the radar it will save your good lady wife from being subjected to a stream of of profanities that would shame a Flemish docker.

Existing chain should be fine for a bit provided you've got good chainline. I ran an old 9 speed chain on my hack bike for about 3 years without any problems.
