Just nearly ripped my thumb open, trying to get some specialized captains onto xtr crest 29ers.

It seems impossible but I have to get it done as I'm riding tomorrow.

Any tips before I end up with new shelves in the lounge.

Just make sure the rest of the bead is in the rim channel, easy!

As above , I use captains and storms on my crest and gold 29er rims with no real issues
Just take you time but Useing the middle of the rim is key

Vaseline on your rim may help when it comes to slipping the bead over. You could apply the vaseline to the bead but that doesn't sound as humourous.

Again get the bead in the middle of the tyre.

It is easier if you are going to go tubeless as no inner tube!

Big tyre levers.

And don't worry - this forum if full of threads from people who have had issues. Its not you. Those rims are a PITA.

Those rims are [s]a PITA.[/s] fine unless you have the dainty fingers of a lace maker

They are chuffing tight (although Spesh tyres aren't usually too bad). I pride myself in being to fit just about any tyre by hand, but really struggle with Schwalbes on the latest Stan's rims, there's plenty of reports of how insanely tight they are. In fact I have a bloody great blister on each thumb from trying to wrestle a new Dirty Dan onto my Podium MMXs last weekend!

^^ It must vary from tyre model to tyre model, cos I just put 2.4" Nic snakeskins onto a pair of Flow rims, no issues there, and some Nic 2.25 snakeskins onto a pair of Arch EX, and again, no issues. One of the 2.25s took a bit of holding to get it to inflate first time, but none were too tight. That centre channel is crucial.

That centre channel is crucial.

Indeed - but it cant be said enough that even those with the problems are perfectly capable of putting tyres on using the centre channel usually, but there are freakish variations with schwalbe on Crests.

Eventually got some ground controls onto my crest 29ers, took a while though.
Rim tape thickness seems to make a big difference, may set them up tubeless if I can face taking them off.

These rims sending me down the tubeless route, picture this:

It's a been a long ride, far from home, the snow is falling and your summer gloves were a bad idea. Hisssssssssssss.

Can you imagine trying to change a tube with cold wet muddy hands in the middle of nowhere.... It's like a Halloween horror story!! Cests = major pita

This is really weird. Yesterday I put Captains on Crests and was amazed by how easy it was. I did use two tyre leavers and kept it in the middle but it only took a couple of mins. Perhaps 26 easier than 29.

Perhaps 26 easier than 29.

I have only seen people with 29er rims complaining.

If you're still using the regular rim tape (as they come with Hope Hoops build) change it for the thin Stans tape or equivalent (electrical insulation style tape). Then you should be OK.

Decided to mtfu and follow the advice about getting the bead in the centre and working bottom to top over and over. And it worked. First one took me ten minutes to get done and second took me 9 minutes including getting it off the other rim.

Cheers chaps much appreciated. They should come with instructions on the stickers though.

As for instructions does the stans site not have a load of FAQ and short vid clips

Yes, and they're all so good you'll learn more from watching them than reading all the related posts on STW..... 😀

Tbh I didn't go on the stans site, but wish I had. Never mind they are on now, and should I require future help I will use their site.

And surely if I didnt post on here, it would mean you who have the knowledge I so desire would not have anything to do.
