You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I used to think how the hell would that actually happen, it's blunt, on your bars and so on, then i found out that it is actually possible, and does make a right mess, anyone else been impaled by their own bike, anywhere else i should stick some bubble wrap when i am back up and running?!
Brings back bad memories of bar ends in the ribs.........
Yeah, wasn't too unhappy seeing bar ends leaving the scene, always liable to smacking your hand off something with them
Yep done that with a Formula R1 lever. Also apple cored my thigh when I lost a bar end plug off a Saracen (many years ago, pre suspension forks!)
NSFW
^^ Femoral artery. Thats die on the track stuff.
Not impaled, but did slit the inside of my thigh when i went head first into a tree stump, did a massive endo, just managed to avoid going over the bars, then slid vertically down the top tube, where the razor sharp brake hose bosses proceded to slit my leg open with an 8" gash and a vein poking out.
Yeah the Gracia incident sprang to mind, innocuous crash as well, thankfully mine had no real blood, went in at the thigh near the knee and luckily there's a lot of empty space in there!
I managed to impale my leg into a branch someone lopped back from a fallen tree to clear the trail, but I didnt see it as the ferns had covered it over. Cue 20 internal and external stitches to stem internal muscle rupture blood loss and try and fill the hole in my leg. 18 months of not riding and still struggle with nerve ending issues and foot problems, but found the mojo to ride from being on Furlough and loving it.
on our first visit to morzine MrsBeanZ managed too land on her brake lever , straight into her calf .
Not seen that vid needle, that was from a brake lever?😳
That looks like a few crashes I've had, ie just normal slow speed stuff. I always ride alone too, puts things into perspective...
Years ago, before I routinely started to wear knee pads, I managed to undo a seatpost quick release with a hamstring tendon.
I still have the scar where the lever went in.
Apple-cored my inner thigh when I was about 14 years old. Through the layer of fat and muscle. Could see the layers. Thankfully no blood, clear core. Wound was about 3/4 inch deep.3 stitches. Doctor said an inch higher and I'd have hit the artery. Thankful to this day. I still don't know if it was bar end or brake lever.
Yeah , I managed it once and put a nice hole in my elbow strangely, required an operation to ‘intensively’ clean.
I tend to set the brake levers up so if they take a hit they’ll rotate.
Lots of things on a bike you wouldn’t want to land on tbh.
Reading this I think I've been really lucky not to have more minging crashes.
Whilst guiding one time I was waiting for the stragglers, stopped, put my foot down onto an unstable rock. Slipped taking the bike with me. Bike landed in me and the oily chainring dug an inch into my calf. Lots of blood. Lots of stitches. Although the worst part was the nurse cleaning out the wound with a scrubbing brush and some stinging stuff before the doc sewed it up.
Another story, more brake related.
About 7-8 years old. It's summer. Got my BMX. mate Bradley wanted a go. Off he rides. Ten, fifteen, twenty minutes later and he hasn't returned. I go off looking for him. At the top of his road I find my BMX abandoned but with some blood on the brake lever and a small pool of blood next to it.
Take bike home and then I hear an ambulance. Phone him up.... My mum phones his mum. No answer.
Go and visit him the next day. Turns out poor Bradley got got his penis caught on the brake lever and cut it in half, leaving it dangling by a thread of skin.
Poor guy had to show everyone's mum his willy for weeks.
