Getting Hope to rebuild brakes

My 2.5 year old Hope V4s still work well despite only recently having their first bleed (pre-Morzine about 5 weeks ago). The main issue with them is sticking pistons mainly on the back - despite cleaning them at the same time they still don’t retract back in as they’re supposed to, plus I’ve actually cack-handedly damaged a few of them in the process. I’ve heard Hope do a full rebuild service where they change the pistons and lever components so they feel brand new again…anyone gone down this route? Do they feel amazing again and how long for…and how many quids will I be relieved of for the privilege?

From memory it was between £50 & £70 per brake. Mine felt like new, had both done at sperate times. One was returned with in 48hours the other took just over a week. Mine were both serviced due to sticking pistons.

They come back rebled with new pads, so if you have internal routing it may be worth getting a local shop to rebuild them instead to save bleeding them twice.

We often used to send customers brakes to them, rather than service them ourselves, it was far quicker, cheaper, and easier for us than doing it ourselves.

They rebuilt an old V-Twin (cable to hydraulic converter) of mine a few years ago, did a perfect job. Quick turnaround too.

Ask Hope to upgrade the pistons to the new stainless steel insert ones, this helps massively with sticky pistons

Or buy them yourself and fit

its great value as you get all new internal components and a set of pads.

I got a rebuild recently. Here was the quote.

“Thank you for your email. We charge £60 per brake plus p+p for a service on a 4 piston brake (the complete brake, master cylinder and caliper). All seals and pistons are replaced, then the brake is bled and new pads fitted. Fitting standard hose adds £27.50 per brake, braided is £35. If you would like to send your brakes in for a service please could you make sure that they are clean and include the attached form. Turnaround is within one week just now but can change depending on the post box.”

I got new hoses too as split and cracks all over mine. Came back looking good as new.

I thought £60 fair as the parts to DIY wouldn’t be that much less. I had a seized piston so no choice.

I got my nine year old Tech 3 E4 back on Friday after a service including hose replacement (hadn’t realised they were splitting until I took them off the bike!) Service included fitting the new hybrid stainless steel pistons. Think it was about £180 for both including new pads.

Yep, had my trust E4s done a few years back when they'd had a few years of hammer. As above, they came back like new, and turned round within a week I seem to recall.

And they'll come back leaking 😆

I had some old E4s serviced by Hope as they were a bit shonky from a second hand bike purchase.  Opted for the new style pistons.  All good and good value I thought as the labour if pretty much "free" once you price the parts and pads changed.

The rear was an internal routing so I did the trick of partially pumping the pistons out, then split the hose at the lever end, rerouted through the frame, then reattached to the lever and pushing the pistons back then pushes any air bubble back into the reservoir so no need for a bleed, just a top up of fluid if need be.

Had my son's Trialzone brakes done by Hope, came back pretty meh, no better than before really. Got them redone by local bike mech and they were great, cost less too.

Not a shop, local bike mech: He spotted that the lever reservoirs were very slightly weeping and needed new seals too. Plus maybe actually did a good job.
