On June 1st I'll finally be getting my collarbone pinned, just over a year after I did it. (It's a hypertrophic Malunion)
My question to anyone who has had this done is, how many days after the op were you able to comfortably use a pen? ( I'm asking because I will have an ongoing design project that I have to do, but I don't want to delay the op as I still can't ride and it's not without pain everyday.)

any info would be appreciated

Paul

Had mine screwed together Nov 2010, they used bone marrow to stimulate growth (taken from my hip) and it all ended well. Reckon it took me a couple of weeks to get used to the strangeness of things (just kinda felt a bit weird) and i could use a laptop/write stuff around a fornight after. But i did get lots of pain if i overdid things. Riding took about 12 weeks, started with road then gradually ventured offroad and havent looked back since. If your interested i have pics i can mail across.

I got mine pinned 8 days ago and It's very uncomfy but not really sore . Its my left hand side so dont know about holding a pen as Im right handed. The worst thing for me just now apart from the boredom and not being able to ride is the 19 staples getting a bit tight.
The operation wasn't bad apart from them trying to (I think) freeze a nerve in my neck which took them 5 attempts and made my head and neck twitch.
I was given codeine and paracetamol which play havoc with your stomach but do work , Im hoping to get back to work in around 5 weeks and on the bike (road) about the same time.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies,

I guess I'll just have to get most of the work done beforehand. I'm used to the pain and it being uncomfortable as it's never healed properly and despite a big lump of soft bone around the break I can move it up and down by about 5mm in the middle. I should have just paid the money and had it fixed when I did it, but I was told by my hospital (Nhs in the UK) that it was 100% guaranteed to heal and they did their best to avoid doing anything to fix me despite my protestations. I had to get a second opinion in the end. Took the new hospital about two minutes to tell me it was a hypertrophic malunion and then got it confirmed with a ct scan. The result is an overly long time with a duff shoulder. I even went running the other day so I could get out in the woods. Getting desperate for some trails:) I guess I'm lucky in some ways as I broke it by landing on my back ( did two ribs too, which the hospital omitted to tell me about until two weeks (for one) and two months (for the other) So I could have injured my spine. Anyway hope yours heals quickly Stanfree and

thanks again

Paul
