This may come across wrong, but
I've become very ( for want of a better word) bored this past year, and am actually wondering if I'm borderline depressed!
As such I have decided I need to take drastic measures, and the only time I feel at ease is on my bike,
Therefore I'm going to jack everything in and go off on my bike, no plan limited ideas etc.
I'm just not sure where to start, and surely I must need a rough plan?
ATM I'm thinking fly to Nz and see what happens,
Or ferry it down to Spain and go from there?
Due to having no friends I'm going to be doing this on my own, so any advice would be much appreciated... Also if anyone has an extrawheel or similar going cheap I could be interested

Tour Divide? It's on my bucket list, so perhaps 2014 if I can afford it.

Do you think there's something underlying that going riding means you avoid? I often wonder the same myself as I felt similar this year, more a trapped feeling than depression as such. I did a LeJog and became accustomed to just riding my bike all day as if it were my job - truly liberating!

Whatever you do, good luck and hope you enjoy it. I would <really> love to do something similar, but have too many ties.

Crack on...

When i cycled one speed to scotland from the dorset coast, I had never had so little, never left so much behind: business, wife, kids, cat, security, a roof, fridge, clean pants... Etc

... But I had never been so happy.

I grab a few days whenever I can, I am scheming a fresh adventure right now.

But don't skip France, they love cyclists... Just load up the bike and head out the door. If you need an objective to get you started... There is a great cake shop in Biarritz.

Cool idea!

But...

Can you explain why you lack friends? It's just that this might be a factor in your mood issues. It's something to think about while you are away. For example there are lots of like minded cyclists on here you might ride with. I have made quite a few through cycling.

Sounds like an excellent idea wukfit, you don't need a detailed plan, nor a specific route, nor a fixed timescale, just get on your bike and say ****-it to everything and bugger-off for an adventure and see what happens along the way. I doubt your boderline depressed (i am in no way affiliated as a medical practitioner btw 😀 ) however i imagine your feeling kinda like myself, i'm just generally sick of this country, sick of the cost of living on my minimum wages (two jobs), i like the area i stay in as it's in the middle of nowhere in Galloway but as such the wages are shite and job opportunities are nil, if it wasn't for the ££ i get doing jobs cash in hand i'd be living off £20 a week for food/sundries once i pay rent/council tax/leccy/phone/heating/car costs/insurance etc. I've just about reached that point myself where i'm about to stick two fingers up to everything and head-off into the distance wi my bike and see what happens.

Head down through france, spain, portugal as others have said l or if you wish your money to last then go to India, i spent 6 months on an enfield out there a few years ago and it was 'the" experience of my life, i'd love to take my mtb back and just cycle around for months n' months - there's no chance of getting bored out there believe me!.

Go for it, 😀

There aren't many times in life when you can drop everything and get away. There's something in me that's always wanting adventure but I've always had too many responsibilities. If you have chance - go for it and enjoy yourself!

Good idea but don't miss France if going to continental Europe.

Are you sure you have no friends though...? This belief (Which could be true - what would I know.) may be affecting your mood perhaps?

Whatever you do have a great time and make the most of it - life is after all about experiences.

Love the idea of this. Do it.

Not sure NZ is the best idea, you limit yourself due to costs of getting there and then timescale due to visa, meaning you have to jack it in after a period of time and return. A sense of being returned to where you started, where you associate with your current feelings of being static.

Europe jaunt sounds like just the ticket, just get on your bike and pedal south. No need for extensive planning and pre travelling etc. Perhaps even more satisfying to depart from your doorstep and be self powered from the start. France then Italy, or Spain should keep you smiling for a while. Could even hop over to Morocco if you haven't managed to outrun yourself by the south coast of spain.
Or head east through Germany and pick up the danube.
Or North and swing up into Scandinavia.

If funds are there to support yourself then limiting factors are very few. Look forward to reading your updates along the way, have fun 🙂

Awesome. Best of luck fella.

I'd love to do this but the time I most need to do it (now) couldn't be worse family wise. Still as long as they are happy and healthly Ill take that above all else.

If you really have no responsibilities and can drop everything, then do it. Life's too short.

Just remember to start a thread entitled 'right I'm off' just before you leave and keep us all updated.

In the meantime why not ride with a club? It's a great way of riding your bike with company.
