So one of my mtbs had loads of creaking sounds coming from the shock bearings and bottom bracket area. I dropped it in to the lads at my lbs to try and figure out what the problem was. On top of needing a new bottom bracket, it turned out that my freehub was cracked in a few places! I was shocked to hear but went in and saw it with my own eyes. Not even sure how that could happen tbh! But if I didn't get the bike checked out for the creaking sound then it could have gone horribly wrong as I would have blissfully ridden the bike this weekend at the Scott mtb marathon.
🙂
make & model? I just discovered same on my Shimano m785 hub last week - awaiting warranty response after sending photos to supplier
It was a Wheeltech 142x12mm hub on DT rims, came stock on my Rocky Mountain Element 950, 2012 model.

[suspicious]Do you own a bike repair business? [/suspicious] 😆

Not everyone knows how to, or has that inclination.
Its not rocket science its a push bike. My Shimano freehub has recently cracked in half M785 in under 70 miles. Madison have them in stock and not an issue according to them. 😯
It wouldn't go horribly wrong, you will just lose the ability to move forward.
I check my bike pretty frequently. I'll stress test it for about 3 hours about 3 times a week....
It's not really something that you'd first discover by "checking out" though.
You'd more likely suffer bad shifting, notice a change in tone from the freehub, poor pick-up under drive, or worst-case scenario - total failure.

This. I had (a Tune) one fall apart on me in a race. It slipped a couple of times under hard pedalling, then the shifting went skewy for 30 seconds or so, then it started making a horrific noise under any load. Took wheel off and cassette and bits of freehub body fell off. Hardly fatal.
Advice is sound though.

Either or!!
for once no once has mentioned superstar 😀
i think the front end is probably the first most important place to check.
Cheers for the heads up
I will be removing my cassette after every ride
😆
I had a freehub utterly die on my road bike once. Had to zip-tie the cassette to the spokes and make an ersaztz fixed gear to ride the 25 miles home. Lucky I had some zip ties really.

Zip ties fix everything!!!
How do cracks even form in the freehub though? Didn't think it would be exerted to enough force.
Dunno, aluminium ones do get pretty chewed up though. Having said that it's not a problem I ever had - the pawls died on mine.
