I bought a new bike 18 months ago. The front brake has been defective since day one, and eventually diagnosed, after numerous returns to bike shop, as cracked piston in the caliper. Replaced under warranty but bike off the road for 3 weeks. Bike returned to bike shop as replacement caliper poorly fitted and weeping from brake pipe connection. Repaired but noticed replacement caliper also faulty - off road for a further 3 weeks whist replaced under warranty despite original one year warranty having now expired.
I have been offered vouchers to value of 10% of the bikes value. Should I be grateful? Is this as good as I can expect? Do I have any other redress or just move on and enjoy the sunshine?
I think your only form redress would be an angry picture of you in the local paper outside the bike shop. You'll need to concoct a story about how it could have been a child and you need the bike to get to your partner's house, who has several medical conditions. It would also help if you could identify as a mother / grandmother for more sympathy points.
Nay but seriously that sucks. I think all you can do is chalk it down to experience and avoid the shop. £60 should get a deore brake, just fit that and ride on.
I had a similiar issue with rear shocks on a new bike whick took 8 weeks to resolve and I was given nothing! Id have bitten there hand off for 10% voucher!
I too am having experiences of this with my brakes at the shop I spent over £4k with.They even had the audacity to charge me at first ''free'' service to bleed the brakes of which still oddly or funnily enough work the same as they did. Lever still comes back to bar and they both don't bite very well.
They sold a fancy titanium build with carbon wheels on when I went in looking at it being prepped for £8000, I say so how's business to which not even a good vibe or word about it. seems they are greedy bastads and take customers for granted.
Also I had issues trying to get my frame bag I paid for weeks ago that was in stock so a lot of chasing up and boiled piss as one might say. haha
Their loss for a while now as I'm just in process of building up my own titanium hardtail and have found a real decent #cough read friendly & transparent place and guess what I don't even mind travelling to get to.
So yeah I reckon you've done well there my son on 10% of bike value back as I barely get a conversation at best.
Wow! Well done, I wouldn't have even thought about asking for money back. Like Oikeith, I waited about 8 weeks for a replacement shock on my 4K bike when it failed after 2 months of use . 2 years down the line and I'm about 6-7 weeks into waiting on a warranty replacement for the frame. In all honesty, I'm not really complaining, as I'm getting a new frame, but I still wouldn't have thought about asking for money as well!

Spent £4k on a bike and the brakes failed after about 6 months (XTR Race, master cylinders sticking in warm temperatures). They were obviously warrantyable, but as they had no spares they could fit, I had two choices: Pay for a brand new set which they would refund when the warranty was processed by Madison, or take the bike off the road for weeks.
Opted for the new brakes route, but what I didn't realise is how much they would be at full retail - £450! I sucked it up and paid it and, 4 weeks later when the warranty completed, they refunded me back to my CC over the phone. Also, they couldn't get the bike into the workshop for two weeks to swap the brakes over, so I had to fit them myself. I was OK with this, but I remember thinking that if I was a regular punter, I'd be pretty pissed with this.
I was a little grumpy about this at the time, considering the cost of the bike, but was happy to get it fixed and it's all good now.

Hmmm - the only 2 times I've bought a bike in a shop I've haggled and got 10% of the price to spend in the shop as part of the deal. Last time was a few years ago so maybe it's not the done thing these days, but it doesn't sound like much of an 'above and beyond' offer.

Angeldust - at the time of purchase I was expecting a bike that I could use. No idea in terms of “compensation” for this not being the case hence asking on here about other people’s experiences.

I would expect an immediate replacement and a gesture of goodwill if it was any other high value consumer product that was defective I.e a television or computer bought from a reputable retailer at full price

So, the complaint is that they have been a bit slow to repair (including a period when out of warranty) but it is now fixed? I wouldn’t necessarily expect any sort of gesture or compensation. 10% of value sounds very generous. If the issue is how long you were without the bike, I would have asked about that while they were repairing it. Did you do that?
Yep, sounds ok to me. A part failed twice and it was replaced FOC both time and now you have 10% money back as well. Presumably it was a faulty batch of whatever caliper brand it was. Also I'm guessing the shop rather than the bike brand or the component brand are giving you the voucher. A lot would not do that for you. If you were the shop manager what would you be giving you?
A few years ago I had a warranty issue that the shop tried to blame on me, "fix" in a totally inadequate and unsafe way, and then (when the manufacturer had provided a replacement) tried to charge me for postage on - after several weeks with the bike (my commuter) out of action.
I didn't get offered a voucher, but to be fair I don't think I would've used it.

It shouldn’t take 6 weeks to replace a caliper, that’s a one hour job! But equally 10% could be a reasonably substantial sum so on balance you’ve done alright I think.
Three weeks for a simple job like that is poor service . Use your discount voucher and then shop elsewhere in future
