A'reet?

There is a Space For Cycling mass ride in the toon on Saturday 25th of April, starting 10am at Newcastle Civic Centre, organised by Newcastle Cycle Campaign and the CTC.

Please come along and ride with us to show your support for better cycling facilities and safe infrastructure.

[img] [/img]

We got nearly 300 people on the last ride (September 2014) including City Council Leader Nick Forbes.

Newcastle has two-thirds of Councillors signed up to the Space For Cycling goals and has received a £10.3 million Cycle City Ambition grant from central government.

In this election year we need to keep cycling on the agenda and make sure that money is spent wisely*
*(Some local politicians don't think we should spend it at all)

If you are on Facebook then here is the official event invite:

If you are coming then hitting the "Going" button on that link will help us prepare for numbers, but don't worry you can just turn up regardless. The more the merrier!

Here are some pics from the last one:

Excellent!

Yeah Mackems and Yackers are very welcome. I don't ride in the toon much myself but what's good for townies is good for us Yackers too.

And yeah kids are very welcome and encouraged. Bike seats, trailers or competent riders on their own bikes. It will be a mix of closed and open road but there are so many of us that it is very safe. We tend to keep all the cycling kids together in a pack at the front with marshals and their parents.

*bump*

Little reminder about the ride this Saturday.

Weather is looking nice and the FB event currently has 189 saying they are going so turn out should be very good.

Turns out there are rides in Sheffield, Edinburgh and Aberdeen too.
I've created a new thread to highlight this:

UN-FRICKING-BELIEVABLE

The ride is CANCELLED because the Council and Police decided today that it was "too dangerous to ride on the roads"

WE know! THAT'S THE POINT!! 👿

Yes, but there's nothing stopping a whole load of like-minded cyclists arriving em masse accidentally at the same time and place, is there? 😀

Bit of civil disobedience, what?

Yeah they still plan to meet everyone and give speeches, so it seems pretty likely that some folk will do an informal strictly unofficial ride.
But we were expecting more than 300 folk, most of whom will now not show up. Absolutely gutted!

It's crap. The thing is, has it actually been deemed 'too dangerous' or is it just a case of the police not being able to afford to cover it?

Who knows? Last time the police were very helpful and actually put in some temporary road closures for us.

We required very little policing compared to the EDL marches!
