I've no idea about that route but I took a bike on the train from Cervignano del Friuli  to Venice Mestre last week. Couldn't have been easier, just turned up at the station - 12 Euro for me and 2 Euro for the bike.

I'd suggest cycling to the station but you're going to have bike boxes aren't you. Unless you can leave them at the airport that won't work.

Taking bikes on trains in Italy is easy. As above, a few €€ for the bike. If the bike is still in the box then it won't cost you.

Trains usually have a wagon or area for bikes.

Cant help with the route from Genoa, but I can tell you about my experience last week, Nice - Finale on the train.

Lugging bikes bags and flight bag from airport to train station, although only 15min walk, is hard work in the blazing sunshine! Train journey itself was fine, but getting the bags on (5 of us) was a little stressful. I wouldnt want to do it in rush hour (if there is one!). We also had to change once. The french train was a modern double decker and nicely cooled. The Italian train was a little 3rd world in comparison. Lights in the carriages didnt work either, so tunnels were pitch black (I took the opportunity to leave my seat and hide, ala murder on orient express lol!). Taxi rank at Finale station always seems to have Taxi Benetone waiting for business. The old guy doesnt speak English, but his son (Giotoni?) does.

We got a taxi back lol! Too stressful for a plane to catch in the morning

Thanks for the posts!Seems like we will be okay getting train then,as we’re not the most organised of lads no doubt we will manage to make it stressful though😉

Any more advice on tickets for train as I was going to book them now but would be easier if could just pay on train.

cheers again

Buy  at the station. No point getting in advance . You'll probably not get checked anyway.

We did Finale from Nice with bikes a couple of weeks ago, not to bad apart from lugging bike bags around train stations! One of our group did get stung for an extra €40 on the return as his bike box was over 150cm - worth checking the size allowance
