First post here, but been reading for a while, so hello nice people 🙂
Retailers are starting to stock Genesis Vagabond 2020, but it is quite different as they moved to Sram and is more expensive, so looking for advice.
I'm new to offroad touring, but there is a chance of running away to South America for a few months.
Vagabond felt right for the job, but now it's sram, i'm wondering if I could do better with 2019 frameset and custom build?
Should I just get 2020 and go for it?
Should I get 2019 frameset and add other bits?
How much I'd have to spend for decent tubeless 29" wheelset build(I'd like to add my own dynamo hub)?
How much, if any, tripple chainset would reduce max tire size?
If I go custom build, do I have to stick with MTB rear gears, o Can I co with lets say 10speed shimano road with 36t cassete?
I hear good things about Shimano bar end shifters in terms of reliability, but are they fine in real life use?
As you can see, I need some ideas, so please share yours
Many thanks
Geeek
Why not the 2019 at a discount?
First quick search turned up this:
Genesis Vagabond
Sure there must be other deals around.
As far as going frame and custom build, it will always end up more pricy.
I really like bar end shifters, the Microshift ones are very good, and my experience of the Shimano road ones is good too.
For general robustness I think the Shimano deore level gears are hard to beat.
Why do you need a triple? And asking how much to spend on a decent wheelset is like asking how long a piece of string is. 😁
The Microshift bar-end shifters on mine have been excellent. I thought I’d hate them and want STIs but I love them.
As of yesterday, my Deore running gear has done about 2100 miles, without any problems at all and used in all weathers on all terrain in Wales.
I like the look of the 2020 bike but not sure I’d pay the extra for STI shifting. I would pay extra for hydraulic brakes, however.
