Hi all,

I have a Longitude here - the 2016 version with the alu forks (steel frame). Tbf I've put some seriou miles on it - mostly off-road/gravel. The only original part now is the frame, headset and brakes - everything else including the wheel set and forks have been upgraded. After a recent trip to Jordan, I noticed what I thought was a 'hair' on the bike, but upon further inspection I noticed it was actually a crack! It's that clean that I thought someone had hacksawed it at first! So much for steel 'never cracking'... Photo attached. I contacted Genesis and they said they have a 'lifetime' warranty on their frames and that I should contact the vendor (looking for the recept now!). Has anyone else tested a bike manufacturers 'lifetime' warranty? The thing is, the 2016 model had sus-corrected forks, which subsequent models do not have- so a replacement Longitude frame actually wouldn't even suit me since I have been running my 2016 as a hardtail and was happy with that. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Rotten luck 😕 (Have a 2015, now going to check it over!)

Only thing I can suggest is get your replacement frame pronto on warranty, sell on then buy a hardtail frame of some sort (whether wait for 2016 Longitude to turn up for sale or buy something else)

Or ... get it repaired. A decent frame builder should be up to that. Argos list a fee of £120 for chainstay replacement, not sure what the deal is with dropouts as presumably the old one would need extricating and rewelded. Then there’s the respray charges unless you’re happy to rattlecan...

So much for steel ‘never cracking’

Never heard that before, more “can be repaired”

I’d imagine the warranty won’t be an issue. Might just have to punt it on though as above

I had a crack appear in the hard tube of a Specialized Sirrus a few yards back, it was 3 or 4 years old at the time. They replaced the frame and fork with the current model, no hassle at all.

Steel can crack, especially at a weak point like a weld to thin tubing. I had a Clockwork top tube go where the brake cable guide was attached, following a poor route choice.

Re: warranty claims, I had four no-quibble frame replacements from Trek over a period of six years, until they managed to get their aluminium welding right on the fifth frame...! But I had to bear the cost of differences in seat post and front mech diameter, stem length, etc, so I wouldn't get too hopeful regarding fork A-C lengths.

If I'd been ragging a frame for 3-4 years and it cracked, personally I'd suck it up and move on. When the Clockwork went (after six years) it didn't even occur to me to try for a warranty.

Put a sticker over it, what could possibly go wrong?
