Just about to build up a frame into a winter bike, which brakes & mudguards would you recommend (25mm tyres)?
Current thinking is Tektro R539 brakes & SKS Cromoplastics guards
I've got a Genesis flyer which I think is a similar frame. I do not recommend Crud Race Guards. You have to adjust them every ride to stop the stupid things rubbing. Colleague has SKS Blumentials (spelling?) he likes them.
Personally I went for Shimano R451 in black and replaced the one piece brake blocks with black shoes and cartridges from 105 callipers. I went for SKS Chromoplastic guards in the narrowest size and my 25mm GP4000s tyres fit under them nicely.
Chromoplastics are the best option if cost comes into it... PDW Full Metal Fenders complement the frame beautifully if you can justify the price - https://www.ridepdw.com/goods/fenders/full-metal-fenders-road.
Shimano R451 or Ultegra-level R650 are the brakes to go for IMHO.
Shimano R650 with Swiss Stop pads. Miles better than the Tektro options.
SKS guards.
I'm running SKS bluemels guards but with SKS Chromoplastic stays - prefer the shape of the bluemels but don't like the skinnier stays or quick release mounts.
Brakes are Shimano R451 with upgraded pads. I'll probably fit TRP RG957's at some point though.
Sks longboards, extra coverage on the front especially is really good. Any brakes but new pads, no long drops come with decent pads.
Different bike, but I any for tektros with kool stop salmon pads and they work brilliant.
when the equilibriums were first out I remember lots of posts from people removing the tektros for better brakes. They are long drop brakes, so maybe that shows up the differences to the better shimanos more.
I use shimanos with the salmon kool stop pads and they work really well.
