You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Finally scratched the gravel itch, and bought a 2020 Genesis CDA 10. Loving it even more than I thought I would, despite being one of the cheapest gravel bikes out there, just feels light and fast and nimble compared to my Sherpa, and finding myself riding it for everything*.
Which brings me to my first upgrade - the 700c x 37 riddlers are actually pretty capable off-road, but I want to go as big as possible. The website says max 700c x 42, but i'm tempted by some 700c x 44 raddlers. Anyone running 44's or bigger in a CDA 10 (2020 version with steel fork)? Would also be interested if anyone is running 650b in a CDA 10 and what tyres fit.
* I won't be taking it to BPW, Afan etc. but i've only ridden from my front door since lockdown so far.
Not specific to that bike:
Presumably that max tyre size errs on the side of caution, but I'd be wary about going too big. Obviously it depends on tyre profile, width measurement accuracy, rim profile, rim flexibility (don't underestimate how much the (cheap) wheels flex under load) etc but don't overdo it.
Also you'll be surprised how much different a 42mm tyre will feel compared to a 36mm one.
Thanks, yep i've gone through the whole 'maxing out tyre sizes' journey on my hardtail to find that i've wasted £50 on a tyre that rubs under hard cornering, and have seen how the claimed width varies massively. I'll probably be cautious but hoping that someone out there pops up with a "I have that exact model, and x tyres fit perfectly, here's a picture..". Might get lucky 🙂
...and two days after I post this, my first punch puncture (on this bike)! I think i'm going to try 700c x 42 WTB resolutes and have a crack at tubeless conversion...
The Riddlers are great but they are fragile.
I've got them and running with tubes - they're a thorn magnet
Fo the record, I ended up playing it safe and buying some 700 x 42c WTB resolutes. Clearance is still good, but not quite enough to run full mudguards. The extra volume and bigger knobs has made the bike much better off-road - it really is straying into 90s xc bike territory now.
Maybe a bit more draggy on tarmac, but not loads...
Hi there, are you still running 42mm or have you managed to go wider? I have the same issue with my wife's CDA 20 and really need the widest possible tyre for her.
Did you consider placing an even wider tyre up front? There should be more clearance.
Thanks!
