You know how these fancy Garmins can create a route of, say 25 miles or whatever? Is there a similar thing you can do with a phone? There doesn't seem to be an obvious way of doing it on google maps but is there an app or something?

Many thanks.

Garmin Connect iOS app definitely does it.

Komoot or Wikiloc both have Apps that do what you want.

Think Garmin Connect just builds a route on your behalf “using popular courses”?

ViewRanger is also great - although Maps can be expensive for other countries if you want OS detail.

So does Garmin Connect generate routes the same way that the devices do? And does Viewranger not just have a huge library of other people's routes? Or have I misunderstood that?

+1 for Viewranger. For the UK you can buy OS 1:25000 maps by tile to help keep costs down. An added advantage is that as long as you have bought the right tiles, you can plan offline, handy if you're somewhere remote.

I've got the OS app on my phone so I've access to maps (and more than enough inclination to spend hours studying them) but what I'm after is the sort of 'surprise me' feature that some of the Garmins and similar have. But on a phone. Garmin Connect seems to do it with a choice of 'road', 'mtb' or, bang on trend, 'gravel'. It doesn't really matter how it gets the result I suppose but I just fancy something that will guide me over a pleasant route in an area I don't know without me putting any effort in.
