A chain crying out for a second quicklink.

Didn't know chains could survive for any length of time like this. Rode it for a day wondering why my chain was skipping. No appreciable stretch and waxy chainlube makes it look a mess but it'll get me through for a few more adventures I reckon.
Anybody know what might cause an outer plate to crack? I thought wonky gear changes tended to pop the rivets. Rock strike?
I'd be inclined to swap that out but that's just me.lol
I did 10 miles back home and only realised a few days later that a link snapped after a chain jam. Ah well.
Thing is it still shifted well and no problems. Only when I was dropping oil onto the rollers did I notice a link snapped. Only ever snapped two chains in 32 years - both on MTB's but only ever noticed at home (every ride is checked).
Not been stranded yet.
New chain though - don't mess, they don't like being re-joined after 8 speed (nor designed to be)
