whats the best set up for gears for a 29er, just use what 'works' for a 26 er?
or is there a specific set up ? do you need a bigger granny ring, a larger middle, or a 1x10 and what tooth for that?
am collecting, buying bits for a spring build.
cheers
I used a two tooth bigger cog on the back on the ss compared to 26" some use a bit smaller crankrings on them, I have a rohloff that's set up as pretty standard 26" hearing gear isn't quite as low prob lose a gear or two at the bottom
Shimano XT 2 by 10.
Same gears.....stronger legs 8)
I have a standard 3 x 9 on one of my 29er's. 22-32-44 up front and a 32-12 cassette. I also have a 1 x 10 with a 36t up front and a 36-11 cassette. As single speed, I use 32t with an 18t rear, but that will be different for other folk due to where they live etc!
Gearing is effectively 10% 'harder' on a 29er, I'd go with a 34t single as opposed to 36t on a 26" bike.
too many variables here, you need to experiment and find whats best for you, your bike and location. i use 22/32/40 x 11-34 on one bike, 34 x 11-36 on another and 34 x 20 ss.
if you allready have some gears just use them 'til you have an idea of whats going to be best.
I just swapped over the drivetrain from my 26" bike straight onto the 29er - 3X9 22/32/44 chainrings and 12-32 cassette.
Like Njee says, 29ers are about 10% higher geared than 26ers.
Derailleur gears are roughly 10% apart, so if you use the same size sprockets, you will effectively lose one gear off the bottom and gain one at the top.
How often do you use 1st gear ? Would you miss it ?
My 29'er came with 2x10. After racing it for all of last season I've decided I really don't like it! Thought it would just take a while to get used to but I never liked it much. It just seems like too big of a compromise.
1x10 32-36 front and 11-36 rear and you are well suited
1X10 32 front 11-36 cassette, works for everything, GT/Inners, Drumlanrig etc and have done a few all day rides with it as well, suits me just fine. I do find when I'm riding natural trails if I get long fireroad downhills I spin out a bit but its rare.
I was running 32t chainring on my 29er, but found I was having to push bigger climbs especially in Alpine/Pyreneean areas. Now I use a 28t Bling Ring from MRP with an MRP Micro chain guide. The Bling Ring fits directly on the splines of X9 cranks. 11-36 cassette on the back. It's great. I spin out on roads and boring tracks, but who's bothered about that?
You'll have 10% MOAR AWESOME when you ride the 29er, so you'll not notice the difference.
This is fact. It might not be scientific fact.
Ed is that your setup on the EG 29?
Yes it is

Ta Ed, just making plans 🙂
I use 26/38 double up front and a 11-36 cassette out back on my 29'er HT, despite the 'taller' gearing I find it easier than my 26" FS, but then again it is 7lbs lighter 😉
Similar to Steve_b77 now. I had the standard 42/32/24 XT triple and liked it a lot. However it's just worn out and I've replaced the 3 rings with just two TA rings at 38/26t. Only had a couple of rides but pedalling seems good so far. I think it seems quieter when it gets really muddy. Obviously the 26t ring is gonna get a lot more use than the granny on the triple so it will be interesting to see how it holds up.
2x9, 20/32 (one day I'll stick on a 34), 11/32 on rear. I like close ratios on the rear.
34t chainring on the 29er and 36t on the 29er.

What do you prefer then?
Cheers for the replies, interesting about the 10%
