Morning folks

Worn 10-speed drivetrain needs replacing. It's currently a 32t / 11-40 (11-36 w/ 40t expander) / SLX med. cage mech. (Mech. is fine.)

I've replaced it with a 30t (hope) / 11-42 (sunrace) set-up. Unfortunately, I can't shift to the 42t sprocket. The mech/cassette are far too close. I've put a 20mm B-screw in. Still too close.

Is this set-up/range possible? Will a longer B screw (25mm?) be enough or do I need to upgrade the mech. to an (XT) long cage? Will a long cage sort it? Or, is 30t/11-42 10-speed just not possible?

TIA for any experiences / suggestions / advice 🙏🏻👍🏻

Sometimes a longer screw will help otherwise a GOAT link should do the job, there are copies available for about £10.

Ah, ok - I've not come across a GOAT link... is the idea that it effectively 'lengthens' the mech hanger which ultimately makes a medium cage function more like a long cage?

Yes, pretty much. Some sales stuff here - https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/products/goatlink

I have used both a genuine link and copy and they do the job well.

Goat links etc, just move the position of the derailleur so that when they move the jockey wheel clears the sprocket instead of bashing into it. So it just changes the max sprocket size your mech can deal with, though it does mean it is further away that optimal for smaller sprockets - but they work fine.

They don't though increase the capacity of a mech to take up chain slack, longer cages can take up more slack.

Thanks, @rootes1 - I'd not considered that aspect... in your experience, was the additional/noticeable chain slack an issue?

Hiya, should be fine with your mech, just need to get your chain length correct and you are only increasing a little bit.
