I have always had gear cables done at a bike shop, but they were too busy last time, so I had a go, It shifts ok going up but when dropping there may be 3 clicks before it moves down, I re set them on bike stand and it was ok, but went out today and its gone even worse you can shift down a few gears and nothing happens, then it may just drop 2 minutes later. Any ideas?

friction in the cable. Did you replace the outer also? You probably should have.

No I used the old sleeve, might start again and change everything. Knew I shouldn't have taken the easy route.

loosen the cable and then see how freely it pulls through the sections of outer - you only need to replace the sticky ones.

Cut them to a good length mind!
