pretty flat round me, want some more speed on the tarmac sections and thinking of changing from 32t to 42t on the front.
anyone running anything similar?
Thats one heck of a jump from a 32 to a 42, i'd try something like a 36 first if you have any ambitions of going upwards at any point - i know you said its flat where you live but still...
yeah, but i have a 42t crankset in the spares box...
worth a try i think.
Surely if people can get up stuff on SS of 2:1 (eg 32/16) then should be doable on 42/32 if you have no major hills?
42:16 is a farly std ratio for road fixed training IIRC.
I run a 41 ring on my commuter with 12-25 cassette on the back and it *just* clears the frame in the middle ring position. The second the BB goes though I'm going to chew right through the frame....
if you have the bits spare give it a go, what harm can it do?
Agreed, it's a very big gear but if you have the ring just stick it on for a bit and see if you like it/have big enough legs for it.
32:16 on a 29er is 58inches
32:24 is 38.7
42:21 is 58
42:32 is 38.1 (lowest)
so i basically lose the equiv of the top two/three ratios on a 32t...
My mate who is admittedly a beast rode the North Downs with a 44 front and 11-25 rear for a while. He now rides SS which is harder.
just built up my yeti 575 with single up front. I went for a 36, with an 11-36 rear. It has all the gears I need for trail riding, although I do find road sections are a bit slower than they could be. My area is afan/ glyncorwg margam area, so pretty hilly. I haven't been caught out yet. As has been mentioned it is easier than single speed.
I think If iwas going to go 2X10 I'd put on a 32/42 front with 11-34 rear.
