Simple question - the answer might be harder.
Can I run a 11-36 10spd cassette with the rest of the drivetrain being roadie 105 10spd?
If I have to run a MTB rear mech to get the chain capacity, then is the cable pull from the 105 shifter going to work?
Thanks in advance.
Checking Sheldon it looks like I can do this with a 9 spd SGS mech (or non-shadow 10spd if such a thing exists).
Is there no one out there who has done this on a Gryphon or Fargo?
I know it does work for SRAM 10s, not certain for Shimano 10s. It definitely will work for Shimano 9s.
Thanks Sam. On that basis, given that 9 and 10 spd road stuff is interchangeable, a 9spd MTB mech should work. It's just the 10spd MTB mechs that need a different pull (I think).
Done a bit more digging - you need a 9 speed mtb non shadow mech.
Yet more digging suggests an XT 9spd shadow has a compatible pull; in fact the shadow and non-shadow versions are virtually identical.
However they are both theoretically limited to a 34t big sprocket - which is probably misleading as 36 didn't exist at the time.
Out of left field, a 105 medium cage has the necessary chain capacity (XT would need long cage) but is limited to 28t - again, in theory. And at CRC it's £35 rather than £55.
I may have to buy a house this year, but if not I think I'll be getting that Gryphon Sam.
