Garmin Varia…a health risk?

I have one of these and it’s bloody brilliant. But I started thinking about how wise it is to have a radar firing out microwaves inches from your plums…

A quick google shows that traffic cops had higher levels of testicular cancer, claimed to be from resting the radar guns in their lap. Which may add some weight to my theory.

That said I’m no scientist, and don’t understand different types of microwaves, so can someone confirm, is this a potential concern, or no different than carrying your mobile in a pocket?

Pop it next to a cup of water and see how the tea tastes after an hour. (Spoiler: it will be cold). How big is the battery, how much power do you think it emits)

Well if heat is the only risk I agree there would be no risk whatsoever however I thought there would be more factors at play than that

For example, garmin clearly state safe distances for their boat radars, which I assume don’t heat you up either Garmin radar guidance

Now I appreciate a garmin boat radar is going to be a hell of a lot more powerful than the Varia, but then again it’s not 2 inched from your nuts..

sounds like bullshine to me
radar will be in receive-only mode and not transmitting for something like 96% of the time when being aimed, and not transmitting at all when not being aimed.

That said I’m no scientist, and don’t understand different types of microwaves

That's basically why these myths start in the first place

If it's true, then I shudder to think how much thumb cancer and right butt cheek cancer there is going to be in the teen/20-something population with their smartphones almost permanently assimilated to their hand, or stored in the right rear pickpocket-friendly pocket of their jeans when walking thru town.

Biggest health risk for a Garmin Varia is probably from the assumption that it'll improve your safety.

1. Any radiation from a speed gun or your Garmin device will be highly directional and (presumably) facing away from the user.

2. The speed gun will only be emitting when it's being used and taking readings. Also I'd imagine most of those are optical these days?

3. A boat radar will have a scanner, either physically sweeping (those things that rotate on top of boats and at airports) or electronically 'sweeping' around an array of aerials. As the emissions on these are omnidirectional so it can 'see' 360 degrees they need not to be beaning you in the face as they come round so you need to be sensible where you mount them.

Don't worry about it. On the other hand radhaz is a dadhaz...😉

The radar part is pointing backwards to detect cars behind you, no? So away from your nuts?

If it’s that focused then probably not much of an issue. For the rider behind however….😳🤔

Regardless, I think any potential risk would be massively offset by the road safety element

I created a hat-like barrier for my Varia. Out of tin foil.

Cancer can be caused by ionising radiation. Ionising radiation can damage dna particularly when cells are dividing. This damage cause mutations that lead to cancer.

But radar doesn’t use ionising radiation. Ionising radiation starts in the ultra violet and out towards the gamma ray end

How many hours a year do you spend on the bike? I wouldn't worry about it!

If you’re that worried you probably don’t want to be keeping a mobile phone in your trouser pocket.
