I bought one of these last year (the one with the camera and radar, not just the radar) and ended up sending it back within a few days since it was simply unusuable via the app ("using" on a Pixel 4a) and online looks like I wasn't the only one.
Anyone got one and got any idea whether the app has been in any way made functional? It fits the bill for what I would want it to do in theory, but it would need to have been worked on since I last attempted ownership 🙂
(Would love to hear if anyone has similar/same phone and got it to work with the 715)
TIA!
I thought a few people, had been pretty scathing about it including DCR?
I’m waiting until they put image stabilisation on the camera.
Are you saying the app doesn’t work at all, or is just difficult to use. I use an iPhone, app works fine, but beyond initial setup have never needed to use it?
@zilog6128 my memory is sketchy because I've not given it any thought since, but it wasn't that it was difficult to use, it simply would not connect reliably for love nor money. I tried this way, that way, the other way, contacted Garmin support, nothing. I don't use an iPhone, I seem to recall at the time Android and potentially some subsets therein could be the problem, but I wasn't about to buy a new phone to use it...
Fair enough if you don't need to use it after initial setup, but I wanted to see how I might get videos off the app and it was literally impossible. So it went back.
Yeah not great. Once set up tho you can just pop the memory card into a computer or just plug the whole device in via USB (mounts as a drive) to get the video off.
Garmin. Functioning software. Choose one.
@DrJ yep - hence why I ditched years of Garmin GPS loyalty and went Wahoo Elemnt *checks gmail* six years ago and have never looked back. In that time I think I've lost one ride...
I got one last year.
I really wanted it for the camera. Garmin s/w development is utter sh1+×/÷ , that's true. But the hardware seems OK. Realistically the only thing on the market that seemed to have a good enough battery life and half chance of the thing coping wirh UK wet weather (too many bad stories on the Aussie Cycliq stuff).
Camera...OK, but could do with stabilisation. I'm using it as an evidence camera, not trying to record mates riding etc.
(DCR and GPL stag it off as they are comparing / expecting it to be go-pro replacement. I'm not)
Radar. Absolutely fabulous. Waaaay more useful than I'd ever expected.
Light. Pretty good (but not what I wanted it for - and can turn off via the Edge gps head unit I use).
App... rubbish for trying to deal with the video recorded. Partly as its done in 30 sec files.
When I've wanted to get details of some moron passing too close in a German car, I've taken the SD card out and used it in a laptop to view the video. I was able to get stills that showed the car reg clearly enough to be able to provide to the Rossers, and them do something.
(Also used the Gov car tax checker to cross-check the reg when not perfectly clear - if insure of being say an M or N then checking the reg you think it is vs whether the car is taxed and MOT'd can help confirm.
So... would I buy one again ? Yes.
It's not perfect. The app is shiiiiite. But it's about the closest in terms of function, battery life and chance it will still work in a year or two, to what I want.
