if I put my location in and a destination, but don't follow the route, will the garmin re-configure and put you back on route?

No. I'm pretty sure that it will recalculate the quickest route to your end point. If you want to stay on the route, the best way is to to look at the map & work out your best way back to it. It's always best to select recalculate to 'prompted'.

As he said ^^, the recalculate route is a waste of time if you ask me. You're better off zooming out the map and just navigating back that way.

Agreed. The Touring is crap for navigation. I prefer to use my ancient Extrex if following a GPX route.

And don't trust where it tries to take you. On a ride from South Shields back to Durham it tried to take us right through the middle of the Nissan factory in Sunderland.

^^ Aye, had that a few times too. They're great when they work as they should, for following a gpx route you've uploaded, but they do seem to suffer with a lot of niggles as well.
