Garmin out-front mount - all metal?

I use a Ravemen front light which attaches to a Garmin (actually a Lifeline) mount and then my Edge 800 lives on top of the light. It's a nice compact bundle and handily leaves room for a GoPro to hang below should I desire. However, I have twice now managed to snap the plastic insert in the mount, both times when rattling over a cattle grid. I suspect that the combined weight of light plus Edge is just too much.

One option would be a similar mount but all made of metal. (I appreciate there's a risk that I might then snap the tabs on the light itself). Does anyone know of such a thing?

I think these are metal, but the plastic insert (designed to break under impact) might not be up to the task.

Yeah, that's very similar to what I have. It's the plastic insert that's the problem. I know why they're designed like that (as well as being cheaper to produce).

As PJay says, those tabs are designed to be sacrificial so you might have trouble finding someone who specifically makes them "too strong"

Can't you mount your light using the GoPro attachments underneath? (Assuming you never need GoPro and light at the same time...)

Oh, there are all sorts of options, including two mounts, but I'm keen to explore the alternatives 😉

The Ravemen light is for being seen rather.than for seeing with so simultaneously using a GoPro isn't unusual.

If you're happy to pay Garmin warranty prices for replacement units when their tabs break off (they do, I managed it on a couple) try finding an Etsy trader who will print you up a titanium insert.

£5.64.

I think I could manage that.

For the -40 units they made the mount on the unit much more fragile, but replaceable. So it's likely that the mount on the unit will break before the mount on the, er, mount. Then Garmin can sell you another, as above. Prior to the 40 series the mount was not replaceable.

Can you get a go-pro to Garmin adapter so the light could hang underneath the mount instead?

I've got the mount that came with my Magicshine 1700evo which is pretty chunky, but the problem with that is that unless you really overtighten the clamp the weight of 1040+1700 pulls the whole lot down.  I'm going to swap to a mount that uses the stem bolts to get over that.

For the -40 units they made the mount on the unit much more fragile,

Is it? From memory my 1040 is a big lump of metal o the back?

You may well be right - I see that the link to the replacement above says it's for 540 and 840, no mention of the 1040. I do kind of forget about those because I've no desire to ride around with a tablet on the bars.
