So, Santa was very kind this year and brought me a Garmin Oregon 450 GPS, and he even kept the receipt!
Question is, I'd been thinking about getting an Edge 800 and was wondering how they compare, has anyone used either/both? I like the fact that the Oregon runs on AA's so maybe better for multi-day trips, but the Edge seems more bike orientated.
Any opinions (what, on STW?) appreciated so I can decide on whether to keep or exchange.
Or the Dakota 20, which I'm thinking of getting.
The Oregon is too big given the choice of the Edge or Dakota.
Still the three all offer user specific highlights.
Taking proper batteries for me is always the winner whatever the other features.
I narrowed it down to the Dakota and Oregon with the Oregon winning due to screen size. Id tried a friends Dakota which I thought was good but plumped for the bigger screen which is easier to read whilst moving/glancing down approaching a junction.
The AA batteries were another reason due to multi day rides/bivi's with no way of charging.
For me the edges had too many limiting factors for my needs.
Can you use the touch screen on the Oregon with gloves on do you know?
I run a Oregon 550 can use it with gloves on big screen can't fault it. Does everything you need it to. Stick with the 450!
I have had all 3 and all excellent but have just gone back to the 800 just because the mount is better and the battery lasts all day even with the back light on,but for multi-day the oregon will be excellent as like you say you can just pop some battery's in,if you need a garmin discoverer full uk OS 1:50K map I have one for sale it's just plug and play so will work on any £45 posted.
Got both. For road and training 800 all the way. For walking and off road 450 extra screen is way better. But the 450 bike mount is pants. Be warned mine has come off several times.
Overal 800 is best. You can use same micro card mapping in both.
FYI Garmin 800 with 50k OS Discoverer maps is £270 at SportPursuit at the moment..
For balance, my mount for the Oregon 450 has been fine. Never ejected the gps in 3.5 years of use and abuse.
For £30 more than the edge above,

Cheers folks, managed to have a play with an Oregon today and like the resolution on the screen so think I'm going to stick with that, the mount I can see as a man-challenge to modify/make better.
