The fancy one with the soft strap and popper on unit. I know I have to take it off if I want to wash the strap, but do you leave the unit on all other times? It won't run the battery if it's not sensing a heartbeat will it?

I've never took mine off whilst I'm not using it and it has been fine for me. It only works when it can sense the heartbeat.

Yes, just leave it in, no problems ref battery life. Mine goes a couple of years of regular use between changes.

Reading on the Garmin forum the soft strap type appears to be less reliable than the older type.

I agree with that, I've gone through several soft straps. They're much nicer though.

He uses it ten times a week and so has to eat more aubergines.

I still have the old one that sesms to work best with courgettes... It lasts for a few years between swaps, rarely problematic.
