Thinking of getting a Garmin GPS 520 unit as a birthday present idea. Is it good for route planning and following as well as data logging? Not too bothered about having GPS OS mapping on the screen, just a turn by turn guide your be helpful?

I've not got a 520 but I think the mapping/route finding is as with the 800 which I do. It should do what you want and even has limited space for maps too. I'd probably buy one if I was buying a new one (rather than the 1000 for example).

Thanks for that, loads of garmin 500's about, just need to find someone to chat to about them. 520 looks to have more than enough features to navigate a rout from and to record tracks with as for live Strava feeds, no thanks.

DC Rainmaker's site is the goto place for garmin reviews and comparisons, looks like he has just done an initial looksee and not a full review as its so new.

As it so new the software may have a few issues to begin with. I personally would go for the 1000 but I like having the os maps on a biggish screen.
