Got my first garmin watch fenix 6 pro, S/H

which is great, but being honest the app is underwhelming compared to my amazefit Zepp app, even if the watch is much better

Zepp you get a nice display of sleep, HR zones etc etc on the phone app, does garmin have similar?

any tips for usage and apps to get etc?

cheers

Garmin has two main phone apps which confusingly are Connect and Connect IQ, if you haven't got it yet Connect is the one you want with all the stats and graphs while Connect IQ allows you to get watch faces and data controls for your watch.

Other than Connect there's no need for any other Apps.

You can also view Connect in a web browser. Some of the stats and graphs are better viewed this way. The web browser Course Planner is also easier to use than the App version.

If you already use Komoot then you can set up a link from Komoot to Connect that will automatically transfer your routes and they'll appear on your watch.

You can modify all the data displays for your activities on the watch through the connect app.

That's the one I found most useful as the different standard displays can be annoying.

Spotify is ok if you don't want to take your phone to listen to music,  other than that you don't really need any other apps on the watch

first "widget" you need to download is "beers earned"..  all other data sets are useless.

Trailforks app is handy, the Conn ct app itself can be configured to show lots of different bits.

I use Rainy as a better weather app than the native one. I also use Windfinder on this and my Edges for proper wind info. You might need an OS grid reference generator depending on what you're up to. That's it for my suggestions.

I've got a few apps by far the most used is "Barcode Wallet (1D/2D)" by macherel which has all my club card barcodes on Tesco/Coop etc so I can scan them plus pay by Garmin Pay don't even need to get phone out. Top tip download Curve banking app this will give you a virtual card compatible with Garmin Pay but still uses existing credit card.

I’ve just got a Garmin and was pleased to see it could do payments, then surprised when I saw so few banks supported it

Not sure I’d be installing a 3rd party app to handle my payments. What are they getting out of processing your data? You don’t get something for nothing

Aside from the Apps, ditch the standard maps and get the ones from Talkytoaster instead.

You can also use Revolut for Garmin Pay, If you do park runs the Parkrun app is pretty good as it shows your barcode.
If you are paid member of Strava you can also link to the phone and  segments can be pinged.
Enjoy the watch they are brilliant.

@funkydunc - I got curve for the very reason, it works with Garmin watches.

I think their money making is to upsell you to the paid versions, which do have good benefits, if you can make use of them.

I use the free version and it gives better exchange rates than my main bank card when abroad.

I'm sure they do anonyise my data and sell it, but I'm happy with that.

So is it a bank account or just something that acts as an intermediary?

If fraud occurred I imagine your bank would tell you to do one as you have used none authorised apps to make contactless payments ?

They also must be doing something with your data

Is tempting though !

Basically a virtual wallet. So no real difference to Google Pay or Apple Pay. Just another level of abstraction.

I use Curve as well. Very convenient for payments without faffing getting to your phone. Mine is usually buried somewhere in a plastic bag. No issues with Curve - so far.
