I've got an Edge Touring and I'm struggling to upload rides.

This is due to my aincent laptop not being able to run Windows 10. I'm don't use computers for anything as I've a tablet for browsing the Internet and that's as far as my computer use goes.

Express can take upto 20gb of disc space so a new laptop which will be suitable for running Express is going to be around £280 ish from the little research I've done.

A lot of money to just upload my rides and keep track of my mileage etc.

Just wondering if there is any other way of uploading ? Will libraries allow you to download Garmin Express into their system so I can nip in every couple of months or so and upload from there ?

Some of you are probably laughing at my knowledge of computers but I really haven't got a clue. Give me a car to fix anyday.........

thanks

Im sure express dosent take up 20GB maybe 20MB or more likely 200kB. Its just a connection ap.

Had you bought a unit with Bluetooth it would pair with your tablet. Your touring is basically a 800 and needs a USB connection to transfer rides etc and update its firmware.

Garmin Express should run on Windows 7 or later (it does mention on its download page that it may use up to 20 GB of hard disk space but this may include libraries and components that are already installed).

Once Express is running (and assuming you have an internet connection and Express is configured with your Garmin account) it should upload automatically.

Bear in mind though that Garmin units have a variety of interface modes for connecting to computers and this will effect Express's ability to see the Edge (this are selectable via the Edge's configuration menus).

Yeah, I've had the touring about 4-5 years now

ive just googled Garmin Express System Requirements and its definatly upto 20 GB disc space.

i mentioned this requirement to the guy in PC World when I was browsing yesterday and he was surprised that Express could potentially use that much space.

So how much free space do you have on your laptop? It should be fairly simple to reclaim some by clearing out junk (run the clean up wizard) and/or removing unused applications. I take it that you've tried to install Garmin Express without success?

Garmin Express uses Microsoft's NET programming tools which are included with the package and probably take up the bulk of the disc space (if you have Windows 7 or later it's possible that these are already in place).

Yeah, I've tried reinstalling Express and it's not worked

im really useless with computers etc but my laptop is 10 years old running Windows Vista Home Premium, I'm guessing this has been overridden by later Windows

like I said, I've a tablet for Internet browsing, Twitter etc and that's as far as my knowledge goes so I appreciate all your help.

thanks a lot.

Just try installing it and see how you get on. It's a fairly simple thing some of the bulk can be down to all the language and map files it downloads to update the device which can be managed.

If the laptop is running Windows Vista then Garmin Express won't install. The only other option would be to use the Garmin Mobile app on the tablet but, bizarrely, this accepts a bluetooth connection to the gps only and will ignore one that's connected by USB!

There are non-Garmin sites on the internet offering older versions of Express but I've no idea if they're virus free and would work with the Edge Touring/Garmin Connect.

No need to install Garmin Express, you can just do a manual upload to Garmin Connect. They don't make it very obvious, but the option is still there.

Clickon the little cloud icon in the top right.   https://connect.garmin.com/modern/import-data

Then you can just browse to the correct FIT file on the Garmin. Probably in the Garmin\Activity folder.

Or just upload to Strava, and don't bother with Garmin Connect.

Good call, I've done this in the past when Garmin Express has failed to sync; you can just drag and drop the GPS or FIT file from a GPS in Mass Storage mode.

No way it’s 20gb I’ve got it installed on a windows tablet that’s only 32gb capacity total.

thats actually been my solution to same issue as you. Ancient laptop and mainly use iPad for surfing etc. So bought a used HP STREAM 7 tablet off eBay  for £25 running W10 and use it for the garmin. Pretty slow device so not much use for anything other than  garmin duties.

Didn’t fancy a new garmin with Bluetooth as they are larger and not convinced by touch screen more modern ones have. So sticking with my old edge unit and buying the tablet made sense for me.

It can be done from phone/tablet if the Garmin can do ANT+ transfers (i.e. if you would use a dongle not a cable to transfer the data)

Your phone / tablet might have ANT built in, otherwise Using an OTG cable to plug the Garmin dongle into the micro usb port and then use an app called ST Uploader.

I do this for Garmin watch > Garmin connect.

Does the Edge Touring have Bluetooth? My 520 automatically uploads via a bluetooth connection to my smartphone as soon as I press "Save Ride".

Edit: just seen it doesn't.  Bummer...
