I am confused with wether to disable or enable this function and the difference between the two has a significant effect on climbing height. I have a garmin 530 with the built in barometric altimeter and garmin by default disables elevation corrections. But the blurb says that if you enable this function garmin then uses data from professional surveys - I’m assuming this data comes from the likes of OS maps so I would have thought it was more accurate. What do you all use?

My 530 is appalling in its elevation accuracy. Might dig in and enable corrections.

It's disabled by default on my old 500, but I tend to enable it in Connect - yes, it then takes the elevation from the base map rather than the Garmin barometer. I find it more accurate to enable it.

Most of this elevation data is from NASA SRTM. This is fairly low resolution, ie it is based on a grid with one point every 60m. So it can be inaccurate, if going along the side of a steep hill. Or any bridges and tunnels. Plus there are some gaps in the data.

But still, maybe more accurate than the altimeter in the Garmin.
