I've currently got a 705 and a 200, with the 705 using the older mount. Santa is bringing my an Explore, which is a big unit.
Currently I mount my edges on the stem using the Garmin mounts - the 200 with the rubber straps, the 705 zip tied on.
Now with the bigger unit I was thinking of a top cap mount that extends over the stem - giving me the bar/stem bolt clearance - this will be on the Full Sus - road bike will just use the standard mount.
Anyone use an out front mount on the MTB - just thinking that may make the unit vulnerable in a crash ?
How about a flipped out front mount that puts the Garmin over the top cap?
That’s what I’ve done on the gravel bike.
Road bike is just straight out front.
MTB never has the Edge on it (Fenix off road).
Yes you could flip the bike and trash it, but if you manage that you’ll probably have more problems than a scratched up Edge.
This is what I was looking at - only as a more stable mount
Does it not come with a bar mounted out front mount you can just point backwards not forwards?
My 820 did.
Santa's got it wrapped but I think it's the rubber band mount.

Top tube mount, much more protection but harder to see, you can use your regular rubber band mount on the top tube depending how fat it is. The k edge stem one is also good
I've used Velo Champion out front mount for years on several bikes, with no issues. Tough and secure. See this one, which looks updated from mine

I use a Raceware out front mount (double band), with the Garmin on top and a light mounted underneath via a GoPro style fitting.
I can't say I feel an out front mount make the Unit particularly venerable. I think you've got bigger problems if the front of the stem is going to hit something hard. Nothing has budged or been marked after several tumbles.
I guess it depends on you and the bike a bit too. I like to see the display (chrisfroomelookingatstems.com), especially with a lot of time on the turbo lately. It is also a nice place to mount a light underneath to keep things tidy. If you are a trendy Endurbro then you may well look at an out front mount and say "mate you iz well jey" 😀
I use a K-Edge stem mount, with no issues. Nicely positioned for a quick glance down. Multiple colours too!
I'm not sure one mount really gives much more protection than another tbh. Even those top tube mounts i could hit with my knee without actually having to have the crash and I've certainly taken Garmins off mounts that are over stems. The out-front is unlikely to even be hit by you, and would take a perfect OTB for it to really hit the ground (maybe)? Out-front is far better for viewing purposes though, surprising how much of a difference it makes.
All of the above being said....... i still don't use an out-front mount on my own mtb
The stock, O-ring attached, mounts are OK, but you always end up looking for something that suits your specific use case a tad better...
I have one of every option (almost) across all my bikes, and I happen to have an Edge explore (and a 200 as well as a 25)...
On my MTB I have a steerer top-cap mount, great with the dinky edge 25, but the big old Explore runs a good chance of catching a knee or a root in a tumble.
I've got a K-edge offset spaced like the one 'Fossy' posted a picture of, fitted on my Gravel bike that accommodates all sizes just fine without the device wanging about out front.
I don't think I'd want a Top Tube mount, for one thing I'm using little feedbags mounted just behind the stem on a couple of my bikes for tools/spares/snacks, but the main issue would be the general ease of viewing...
I've got a couple of different out front mounts on my road bikes, they're great but I wouldn't trust them too much for prolonged use off road.
One thing I will say, when you get the explore, use the lanyard to loop round the bar/stem, the size/weight of it makes it a prime candidate for getting knocked/twisted out of a mount and accidentally lost by a trailside...
I’ve got the explore - the supplied mount is the basic one with rubber bands and doesn’t work on mtb stems. I have tried a stem cap but it puts the device further back than I wanted and blocked access to my top tube bag. The out front mount in its normal position blocked my lights a bit but flipping the out front means it sits just over the middle of the stem and has been my favoured mount option.
Not sure exactly what you're after but I use this. It's not the cheapest but it's sturdy and comes with every type of mount you can think of (eg. GoPro).

I’ve tried most permutations, I like the sram MTB mount to put it over my stem, it is slightly shorter than a lot of out front mounts reversed so works with 35/50mm stems and still a bit further forward than a stem cap mounted one. The nylon it’s made out of alsohas a bit of give unlike the ally ones on the steerer, I found them annoyingly in the way for some reason. I use out front on road bike and gravel.
Hope that’s useful information. SRAM is cheaper than many too,
, I like the sram MTB mount to put it over my stem
Ah - I've got a couple of the SRAM road mounts and they have been really good (and I'm sure I only paid about £8 for them). I'm guessing the mtb one is different?
[edit - there are some for less than £10 delivered on eBay but only for 31.8mm bars... need 35 for the new bike. another pointless standard change)
I've been using the metal hinged Chinese k-edge copies but the clips in them seem to go loose pretty quickly
I went with the one I pictured - will let you know how I get on with it. You can buy replaceable inserts.
@fossy I use that one you pictured with an 800 and had no issues with it at all. Like the fact you can adjust the angle depending in the stem / bar configuration and also to angle for viewing.
