I'm doing a bit of googling but hoping someone in the know can help me out. I have not used these devices before so sorry if I ask silly questions.

I want to be able to plot the course on my pc, then load into the device to follow the navigation links. I've read the base mapping is dire, the bundle with 50k cost another £50. Would that be ok? Ideally I'd like 25k, or just a custom map of the area I ride regularly (new forest/fod/afan)

Can I do that with opensource mapping? If so could you tell me what site to take a look at? Do I need to buy a copy of memorymap?

Thanks in advance

Still looking at buying the 800 so no direct experience but the bundle price for 1:50,000 looks good value (@ £180 if bought separatly) and should be OK for riding. You can buy 1:25,000 maps for specific areas but they seem to be about £105 which to me is a bit OTT unless I was riding there a lot. Be interested if you've found any open source mapping.

Just use the talkytoaster openstreetmap img files - They are very good for free 🙂

I have found a bug in the 800 on the 50K OS maps. It does not seem to show the route you have taken - just points to the start and then you swap to the Openstreetmap and its all there - Hmm - Hopefully corrected in the next firmware build 🙂

Well I went for the package with 50k in the end to see. I thought the extra £50 or so wasn't too bad.

Now again this could be a dumb thought, but could you scan in a paper 25k OS map you have handy to use as backdrop mapping if it was saved as a jpeg?

I'll take a look at the links over lunch - ta.

Have a look at Mobile Map Creator - http://mobac.dnsalias.org/

you can take 25k maps from Multimap & upload them to your Garmin

Well it would appear the folk at Garmin do provide a similar tool

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/onthetrail/custommaps#fragment-1

The 800 isn't down as compatable though, maybe they haven;t updated the site yet. I'll keep digging 🙂
