You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Is this, after 5 years of being released...which shows how stagnant the bike GPS market is, still the best mid-range bike GPS out there? Usage is just tracking stats, so don't really need maps/functions of the more expensive models. Would look at the Edge 200, but the inability to customise screens puts me off.
Also, if anyone knows of anywhere selling it cheaper than £135, then let me know.
p.s I have a smartphone, but would rather not use it in case it gets wrecked.
Arguably better to buy Garmins once they're a year old at least, they go through lots of firmware updates to fix things - hence the 500 is probably as robust as it gets.
I've not found the screens thing on the 200 a big problem, you get speed / distance / elapsed time then cycle through others at the bottom. Clock would be handy I guess.
Even if you're not interested in mapping/navigation I'd say it's worth the extra for the Edge Touring Plus (£180 at Amazon) which has fully customisable screens, ANT+ sensor support, etc. And if you ever use the maps (free ones are fine) it'll be well worth the extra.
You can see the clock on the 200 while riding by holding the left bottom button in , also its perfect for following a loaded gps route ,its highly underrated imo .
There is a Mio and Bryton equivalents, cant remember the models. Garmin really wins ecosystem wise for me as I already had a heart rate monitor, running watch so everything stores data in the same place.
If you can wait a bit Garmin might be doing there 25 days of Christmas deals (30% off directly from garmin) or Amazon might do lighting deals again between Christmas and new year.
I was tempted by the Edge touring bundle in Halfords with 10% off and my BC 10% but really don't think I'd use the maps enough to warrant it. If I'm going somewhere unknown I generally have a paper map with me.
The Edge 500 is just so tough and simple to use.
