Anybody got an Edge 500? I don't think I need all the mapping functions of the 705 or dakota/oregon series. I'm more interested in training data, but I do think I will use the courses feature for following a breadcrumb trail occasionally. I'll carry a paper map if I'm going somewhere unknown, but can I get an OS grid from the Edge 500 to locate myself on my paper map? Finally, how does the new style mount hold up to MTBing ?
Nobody?
Hi Surfr,
I got a Garmin edge 500 a few weeks back off ebay, as for the grid question i have yet to find a function that allows you to see your current grid reference, and as for the mount its hold up really well and once its in thats it.
I use it for training purposes so does the job for me.
I have one - probably a couple of months now.
For an OS grid reference go to GPS, chose satellites and press page down. It gives it as two letters and loads of numbers (and it changes if you walk around).
Mount is excellent.
Draw backs? The sampling rate is too slow for multiple tight switchbacks - it shows you going in a straight line down the hill.
Great news. I've no reason not to get one now 🙂
Looks like I'm a bit late as you are already convinced.
I'll post anyway.
I bought one last week for pretty much the same reasons which you are looking at one for. I think it's perfect for what I need and the training feedback is very good when coupled with Garmin Connect. I would go for the one with the HR and cadence monitors if you can. I know you won't really need the cadence figures off road but the HR monitor is very good and again the feedback for training is great.
Loads of features in Garmin Connect to have a play with after your ride if you are a training geek like me too which is a huge bonus.
I too noticed that the sampling can be a bit off but it's nothing to worry about as it's not major. Just get one!
Oh I'll definitely get the HRM and cadence. I dod club TTs and started circuit racing recently so I will make use of the sensors and data.
Got one last month.
Keeps the signal well, even in the woods.
Mounts are v good and spare ones cheap.
The only issue I have is when it is really windy or I go quite fast I get an abnormally high HR reading!!!!
Remember you can use third party ANT+ sensors - I had another Garmin HRM lying around so I skipped that.
High winds? I get an abnormally high reading when I'm close to steep slopes.
Jase how abnormal is the HR reading your getting? high 200's or low 200's. Iv never really used a HR monitor before and the 4 times iv used it i have peaked at 202bpm so not unusual if your are pushing yourself.
The only issue I have is when it is really windy or I go quite fast I get an abnormally high HR reading!!!!
I've noticed this myself with my Garmin. I've recorded heart rates of over 230, even when I'm taking it easy going downhill, so definitely abnormally high.
I think its caused by my shirt flapping, and the HR strap detecting this as heart beats. The obvious solution is to wear a tighter shirt.
The obvious solution to this is to by my Cosmo which is a thin bio-sensory enabled merino shirt (the sensors are in the fabric - its like a very light undergarment) which comes with an Android App (nokia soon, iPhone impossible thanks to Apple at the mo) and a power meter for your roadie. Then you get HR, respiration, temp, GPS loc, track, speed, cadence, power etc all on your handset which you download and tear apart over a beer when you get home....coming soon.
Jon in Sports Science has one - give him a shout.
Ooh ta dave. Will pop over and pester him for a play.
You may have answered this in my other thread Col (I forget where I asked it!), but how does a base layer include power sensors?
How abnormal?
Pushing it uphill I reach mid 170’s. Going downhill it reads well over 200!
The instructions say it can be worm with the sensor on your back, anyone tried this?
